11  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / Chat-speak scarf on: January 03, 2008 08:15:58 PM
This scarf I made for my 14yr old niece. It's all speech bubbles with chat lingo. I made it with arctic fleece and sewed two colors together so it's reversable. One side is a gorgeous green and brown stripe the other is solid brown. I also reversed the fringe so the opposite colors are on either side. I was VERY happy with the final product. It's probably the biggest project I've done since it was all hand sewn and I never sew!!! Funny that two days after I finished it, my mom gave me a sewing machine for Xmas! :p

I had to translate a few for my sis, so here's what it says:
OIC (oh i see!)
ORLY? (oh really?)
BRB (be right back)
LOL (laughing out loud)
GR8 (great!)
MYOB (mind your own business)
ROFL (rolling on floor laughing)
IDK (I don't know)
BFF (best friends forever)
W/E (whatever)
OMG (oh my god!)

12  IMAGE REPRODUCTION TECHNIQUES / Stenciling: Discussion and Questions / I'm an idiot! Need your help re: chemicals on: December 21, 2007 08:11:50 PM
So I tried doing some bleach stencils on tshirts tonight. I got the brilliant idea to use a film strip as a stencil....DUMMMB!   Once I sprayed the bleach on, the chemicals from the film started running onto the fabric. I just threw it into the wash and is now drying, but I know it smells like more than just bleach. Did I ruin it completely? Do you think it's still wearable? Or should I just toss it out? Sad

here's a pic of it. See where it's blotchy and lighter? That's where the chemicals started to pool.

any idea of it's still wearable and ok to wash with other clothes??

13  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / My rather offensive costume ..not for the faint of heart on: November 01, 2007 03:25:01 PM
Howdy all. One of the reasons why we try to keep discussions on the topic of crafts and is that sometimes emotions run high and we get flooded with requests from people who want these discussions squashed and lambasted by others who strongly feel they shouldn't be stopped.

There are some things in life that people will never agree on. And for this reason I think we all need to just ease off of debates like this and focus on what we can all agree on... Crafts!

Please don't voice any more opinions on your pro or anti abortion stance.  If you don't have anything to say about this costume from a crafting perspective, than just leave this thread alone.

Thank you.

So the story behind this costume goes as follows:

I went into a local "Lovers" store to buy condoms and saw that half the store was "sexy profession" costumes. sexy construction worker, sexy cop, sex pirate, etc. No big deal, it's been getting worse each year. But then I went home and checked the mail. There was some junk inserts from a local costume store and they had pics of the little girls costumes...and they looked JUST LIKE the adults! Little girls as naughty witches in form-fitting dresses, corsets and fishnets. I was disgusted. First child pagents; now halloween!  It's a pedophile's paradise!

So I got my costume idea... take the most offensive profession I could think of and make it "sexy" to knock on all the sexy costumes out there. I came up with "sexy abortionist/black-market stem cell dealer". I wore my own lingerie, fishnets and high heels. Bought a lab coat and covered it in blood and some wire hanger drawings. Made a wire hanger necklace with a red bead and some sharpie blood. made a hospital ID for my character's name "Dr Bebe Keeler, MD" and the best part...I made little fetuses out of Crayola Model Magic, covered them in fake blood and put them in baggies labeled "stem cells $10"

People who saw them were thoroughly disgusted. And my point was made... I think Smiley

ETA additional explanation: Seeing the girls' costumes was what made me realize the whole "sexy" thing was getting ridiculous.  I wasn't specifically trying to make the statement about the little girls' costumes as I was pointing out that the "sexy profession" costume was getting out of control. It was just seeing that it was reaching to young girls' costumes that made me want to poke fun at the whole idea of "sexy" in random professions and other typical halloween costumes.

15  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Vegas bday idea? on: September 27, 2006 03:09:59 PM
My friend and I are going to Vegas for her birthday this year. It's October 13th, which also happens to be a Friday this year (ooh scary!)

I spent  most of my money on the hotel and airfare so I can't go too big on a gift. We already decided to get a massage in the hotel spa and have a nice dinner to celebrate. But I still wanted to get her a little something.  Maybe like a lucky charm...but NOT a rabbit's foot since I used to have a pet bunny and that's just gross!!!

Any ideas? She's turning 36, not big on gambling...just plays the slots. Oh and we're staying at the hooter's hotel. Not sure if any of this helps for ideas
16  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Sympathy gift? on: August 07, 2006 11:48:37 AM
Huh my co-worker's dad recently passed away and I wanted to make him something. I was thinking of some sort of memorial but I don't have pics. They are 100% Irish (born in Ireland) so I kinda wanted to do something with gaelic poetry or design. I just don't want it to be too much about loss..more about celebrating his life.

ugh. any ideas??
