2  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: Steampunk swap (Sign-up Dec 22 -> Jan 5 Send Feb 5) on: January 04, 2008 02:00:10 AM
Hi, another lurker here who wishes she could participate.  Cry

Since I bookmarked the discussion thread I've been meaning to look up this artist I saw in an old Bead and Button magazine I have because I thought her found object jewelry would be appropriate inspiration for this swap (especially the Talisman collection):

3  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Re: a steampunk swap, anyone? on: December 03, 2007 11:29:37 AM
Ooh, ooh, *waves* Me please! I love steampunk. For me it came from roleplay. Castle Falkenstein was my first introduction. Even if you don't roleplay it's a fantastic read.

I'll have to have a good think about what I can make. Knitting is my main caft but isn't very steampunky  Cheesy

I love the links people have posted!

If you're on Ravelry, there's a whole thread on steampunk and knitting in the Goth knitters group message board.

5  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / Re: Toy recalls and the handmade christmas... on: November 13, 2007 06:10:10 AM
Thers some great ideas here.  I'm making all the children in our family I spy bags this year.  To make them personal I have printed photo's of the family onto shrink plastic, so they can find mum or grandad as well as all the other little bits.  I'm making these for my 12yo son and 16yo niece as well, as they both saw my prototype and asked for them.
Going to make them with a small window and the tiniest items I can find for the older ones to make them more difficult.

I've also seen people make I Spy bags for older kids with only all-white items in the white beads to make it harder. Smiley

Probably won't be able to participate since my baby is probably going to be born near or during the swap if it starts soon.  Here's a link to a pattern for a bag & placemat for ya:

7  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / Re: Gift ideas for someone with multiple chemical sensitivities? on: November 09, 2007 07:39:03 AM
You could do a hand-dyed or handpainted silk scarf - a dye seller like Dharma Trading or Pro Chemical & Dye could probably point you to a product that is good for people with chemical sensitivity.

Or you could google for info on natural dyes (a lot of times you can forage dyestuffs or use grocery-store items, onion peel is one I know of).

Maybe something from etched glass?  I don't know how completely the etching chemical rinses away.

I guess I hit post?  I wasn't finished!

I'm making (from instructions found online):

this knotted doll
this cube baby toy

You could also easily dye some playsilks from purchased habotai (china silk) scarves - you can get the scarves inexpensively from Dharma Trading or Thai Silks, and they can be dyed with fabric dye or kool-aid.  I had a hard time finding a description of playsilks, but I guess this retailer sums it up pretty well: http://www.elliebelly.com/catalog.html?category=4

I'd love to hear more ideas of what people are making for babies/toddlers this holiday season - amazingly I just scanned the baby shower board and came up with very little!

Not sure if this will help but I know we got some good ideas of gifts to make our niece and nephews from here - http://www.hearthsong.com
They have a lot of cool toys... we plan to re-create some of the block sets and craft kits  Grin

Kwik Sew sells a pattern for this puppet theater.

I got these sibling onesies in a swap (for two boys, but you get the idea):
