1  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / Re: 2008 Completed Costumes Scrapbook! (completed project pictures & links go here!) on: November 17, 2008 08:25:32 AM

my fiance and i went as the dia de los muertos bride and groom this year [which is actually kind of weirdly sweet, since we're getting married next year, right after halloween! hee hee].

the masks were cheap-o flimsy plastic masks that i plastered over, sanded & handpainted. the floral headdress was a foam visor worn backwards and on top of my head, covered in silk flowers. i also made the veil and his boutonniere.

the clothes, i admit, were not handmade--the dress, however, is a heavily altered goodwill dress that i scored 5 years ago, and i take credit for all the alterations. it used to have giant 80s sleeves, and no waist--i did a lot of shaping. Smiley

2  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / Re: Cable Hat! on: November 17, 2008 08:25:09 AM
i love that you 'cabled' in crochet......i didn't even know that was possible! i've been knitting for a long time, but i'm still new to crochet, so it fascinated me a little. anyway, good job and it looks great on you! Smiley

5  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Re: Lacy cardigan on: November 17, 2008 08:22:03 AM
that's such a beautiful pattern! and i think as long as you layer it with much something longer, it will look intentionally 'cropped' instead of 'too short,' so don't worry about it! it looks very cute in the picture. Smiley

i know i'm hardly the first to agree with you on this topic, but here goes anyway...............this is exactly the situation i am finding myself in! and it's no problem at all. i'm pretty much a tomboy as well, and most of my friends are guys, including my best friend [second best, technically, after my fiance]. i have a few female friends that i like and hang out with, but we're not especially close in that squealy-girly-'ohmygodbemymaidofhonor!!!' way a lot of girls seem to be. and it seemed weird to ask girl friends to be in the wedding party just based on the fact that they're girls, when i have a really close friend who happens to be a dude.

so, i just asked my friend if he'd be my 'bridesman' [like a groomsman, i guess?], and he was pretty thrilled. i'm probably going to have maybe one female bridesmaid as well, so things will end up pretty balanced. still, i think it's awesome to have suits standing on your side! plus, bonus, now i'll get to be my friend's 'best woman' [or something like that] at his wedding! Wink
10  Halloween / Halloween Costumes / Re: Please post your best costume... on: September 26, 2005 08:34:31 AM
the costumes are foam core, all details are painted on in acrylic paint. attached to the back is a sort of duct-tape harness with two shoulder straps, like wearing a backpack backwards? it's hard to tell in this picture, but we're also wearing really exaggerated doll-like makeup: lipstick blush circles and drawn-on eyelashes.

these also need to be scored and folded horizontally somewhere in the vicinity of your waist in case you ever want to sit down--once you've done this, the 'skirt' sticking out in front of you makes a lovely drink tray, by the way! Wink

this was last year's halloween, but since i have a group of friends that loves to throw costume parties, i have more costumes that i've been proud of than the average person. the year before this i went in black-and-white fifties housemom style [much like i saw someone post earlier in this thread] with the same friend pictured above. i also went as sputnik to a 'space vs. hell' party with a silver miniskirt, modified off-the-shoulder red t-shirt that said 'sputnik' in russian and had rivets painted on it, and a colander on my head.
