453  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Discussion and Questions / Re: Cross-stitching fine art patterns on: October 01, 2005 05:33:03 AM
If it was me, I'd make my own pattern. http://www.darklilac.com/upload.jsp Since all the ones you're looking at mean you have to buy your thread anyways, it's just cost efficient to do it this way.  Other than that, I'd choose the one with the most colours.  It probably means that the shading is better.

I have the perfect solution for your problem.  Go get your picture, and save it to your compy.  Then go to http://www.darklilac.com/upload.jsp.  Click 'browse,' put your pic in, then it'll convert it to DMC colours.  Open it with Adobe (it's safe to dowload).  The image might be, like, thirty pages long but you can then transfer it to graph paper, by hand, etc.  Hope this helps.  (Btw, on the 'prefences (of a sort) page, the number of colours available is the number you want to stitch with.)

You can always take a photo, then load it on http://www.darklilac.com/upload.jsp.  Open it in adobe, and you get the DMC colours, with your photo turned into a pattern.  Best part is, its absolutely FREE! Cheesy
457  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Discussion and Questions / Re: Extreme newbie question about cross stitch patterns on: September 26, 2005 01:25:39 PM
A quick tip:  When working from the center, try to find the closest objects to the starting point.  After a while you get enough done that you can count to any spot, at which point I like to finsih a colour.  (Except for outlining.)  I have friends that just build as they go though, it's up to you.  I personally think it's easier to work with one colour/symbol as long as possible.
458  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Discussion and Questions / Re: Cross-stitch question - hoop or no hoop? on: September 26, 2005 01:21:38 PM
Cross stitching is one of my favourite hobbies.  I can tell you that I always use a hoop, unless the project is too small to get a hoop for.  You can get hoops made of plastic that just have snap in metal bits, but I prefer the ones you tighten manually.  You get a much stronger hold that way.  Although the wood hoops are nice, they sometimes leave dirty marks on your fabric.  I personally opt for the plastic manually tightening ones.  (They have a little circley thing you tiwst to tighten.)  When you find out what you prefer, be sure to post it here!
459  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / Re: Tarot Card Cross-stitch on: September 26, 2005 01:14:29 PM
That's awesome!  I love cross stitching.  It's one of my favourite hobbies.  I always planned on doing a deck of cards, or something of the sort, but now that I think about it, Tarot is definitely the way to go.  It'll be a long project though.  I'll definitely post pictures when I finish.
