1  FIBER ARTS / Dyeing: Discussion and Questions / Re: Dyeing in the UK? on: May 13, 2007 09:04:34 AM
I've dyed with food colouring that I got from a sugarcraft shop and it turned out OK, the colours aren't as dark and look more pastely than I was hoping for but I could probably have increased the amount of food colouring to fix that. I can't be sure how colourfast it all is as I haven't made anything with the yarn.

Also, I've got undyed yarn from Fibrecrafts, Wingham Wool Works and Texere.
2  FIBER ARTS / Felting: Discussion and Questions / Re: Wallace and Gromit's Lady Tottington: Needle Felted Hair? on: October 06, 2006 11:31:38 AM
I think it is needle felted too. When I first saw her in the movie, I elbowed my husband and excitedly told him that I thought her hair was felt!
3  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / Re: Buying a Spinning wheel on: September 04, 2006 11:26:21 AM
Definately try before you buy if possible. I joined a nearby spinning guild and they had some guild wheels that I borrowed. I tried the Ashford Traditional, which spun really well but was a little big for my tiny house and also the bobbins were too small for the bulky yarn I like to spin (although there is a bulky attachment that can be bought to go with it). Someone else gave me a wheel with slightly bigger bobbins than the Ashford but I struggled to spin on it and today, I just picked up a wheel with a funky orrifice that I think would allow for giant yarn and bobbins about 3 times the size of the Ashford. I don't think it's a production wheel (There's a hand branded "Easy Spin" on it) but I think that this is the one I'm going to go with. I've been able to give the other two back and have figured out what I like to spin.

4  FIBER ARTS / Felting: Discussion and Questions / Re: Wool paper on: May 30, 2006 03:59:53 PM
I've made silk paper laying out silk fibres in a very thin layer on top of a net curtain (in a similar way that I lay out wool fibres when making felt) and then put another net over the top and painted a cellulose solution on top of the net. I then left it to dry and when it was dry, I had a sheet of silk paper that I could cut using a pair of scissors. I guess the same thing could be done with wool and the shapes cut out and put onto felt but I haven't tried it.

That's an excellent project! I've found that boys really love making felt (one kid said he liked it better than basketball!) as much as girls. I think it's the tactile, messy part that's so appealling, not to mention the feeling that you've magically made something out of fluff that we all get when we make felt.

Love, love, love them!

I know, Cumbria is a ways away. I heard that there's a wool festival type event in North Wales, which seems closer, but is still a big trip.

That's SO hilarious! Great needle felting.

I love it, the colours, the shape, everything.
