131  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / The Swap Gallery / Magical Mobile Swap Gallery! on: February 17, 2005 08:11:33 PM
i know germ@an_chocol@te is super busy, but i wanna see everyone's mobiles! so i started a gallery. plus, i wanted to show off the mobile i got! and the mobile i made!

this is the fabulous mobile beatnik_chik made for me!

beads, sparkly things, feathers, and most of all, VIRGIN MARY!

she's used beads to spell out "hail mary full of grace" around the edges! and she's used this really cool ribbon in three different colours that shegot from a church somewhere, but i can't remember what country! (what country was it?)

the three different mary's hanging down. callie said she got two of the images in the ukraine, which is super awesome!

since we were the only two canadians, and we live in the same city, we decided to save on shipping, and i dropped hers off at her house and picked mine up, and we had tea and a muffin. it was really cool. she even wrapped mine all up pretty in tissue paper and a crocheted flower and yarn she'd spun herself!

133  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Il Mio Valentino Postcard Swap (WWTMCT?) (SIGNUP CLOSED! MAIL BY FEB 1st!) on: January 13, 2005 01:27:13 AM
Swap name: What Will The Mail Carrier Think: Il Mio Valentino Postcard Swap
Craftster member who is organizing this swap: crafty_dame
Sign-up date range: 1/12/05 1/22/05
Date to send item by: 02/01/05

Limited to a certain number of people? no limit! everyone will be expected to send postcards to at least 12 people.
Non-U.S. participants allowed? Most definitely. And there will be no limit to international folks, so please be aware when you sign up that POSTAGE MIGHT BE A BIT MORE EXPENSIVE THAN MOST POSTCARD SWAPS, depending on how many international crafters sign up.

All ages allowed? yep!

Organizer is aware of current list of "suspended traders"
list and will not allow those members to participate:

Organizer has been a member for at least 1 month and will
make sure that every participant has been a member for
at least 1 month:

Details of swap:
Create at least 12 postcards on a Valentine/Anti-Valentine theme, and youll receive at least 12 postcards back. This swap is for postcards that you have made, not purchased. (though purchased elements are fine!) Though 12 is the MINIMUM number of cards you have to make, all participants will be given the full list of addresses, and if you choose to, you're welcome to make them for everyone else as well. Keep in mind that even if you make 20 postcards, you're only guaranteed to get 12 back (though you'll probably get more!). If you've got the extra time, feel free to go crazy!

Why is this a great swap? Because its inexpensive! (postcards only cost one stamp in most countries!) Because youll get some great pieces of art! Because one of the things you miss most about elementary school is valentines!

How to make your postcards: start with a firm, sturdy base. This can be cardstock, old cereal boxes, old folders, cut up cardboard boxes, whatever youd like, as long as it will hold up in the mail. Do anything youd like that fits the theme, collage, photography, prints, paint, glitter, whatever your little heart desires. Add quotes, add poetry, add song lyrics. Whatever you can think of. Be totally creative, just keep it mailable. (Clear contact paper goes a long way towards keeping postcards mailable! It protects them from the weather, and keeps pieces from falling off, or a trail of glitter from being left in post offices throughout the world!)

Keep in mind that some of the swappers might have parents or little kids living with them, and keep it appropriate.

Dont forget to put your craftster username somewhere on the card! Fill in the back with whatever youd like, a little letter, some quotes, your favourite links, instructions for a valentines craft, your favourite recipe, whatever.
Just remember to keep it valentines or anti-valentines!

When can I start? You can start on your postcards as soon as you sign up! Ill send out the addresses to everyone via personal message the day after the swap closes. For inspiration on your postcards, check out the swap gallery both for past postcard swaps as well as other mail art swaps.

REMEMBER: you cant get delivery confirmation on postcards, so this will be on the honour system. Remember the golden rule: treat others as youd like to be treated! If you need to pull out of the swap, or youre gonna be late sending them (please dont! we want to receive them by valentines day!), LET ME KNOW ASAP!

If you want to participate, information to send to organizer:

Name of swap:
Craftster username:
Email address:
Your real name:
Mailing address:
You must be willing to ship to an address outside of your own country. Are you willing?

Also remember to read the Swap Info Guide to find out how to ship your item and other details about participating in a swap.

Thanks to germ@n_chocol@te for the idea, name and some of the swap description!
134  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / another WWTMCT postcard swap? but issue themed! on: January 08, 2005 09:29:14 PM
i know that the most recent What Would the Mail Carrier Think (WWTMCT) swap isn't nearly over yet (i'm still planning my cards), but i had an idea for another one....

i love that the most recent one is themed! and i was thinking about postcards that actually would make the mail carrier (or the recipient, or a friend, or a roommate) THINK.

i think crafting can be political, and i think postcards are a great way to spread messages that you think are important. in canada at least, postcard campaigns are extremely common. groups create postcards that are pre-printed regarding a certain issue, and all you have to do is sign your name, and send it off to the prime minister.

so how about a issue postcard swap? it could be anything that you think is important, human rights stuff, like sexism, racism, sizeism, ageism, homophobia, transphobia, heterosexism, spousal abuse, child abuse, genital mutilation, abortion, date rape etc, or it could be other issues like animal testing, animal cruelty, environment, rocking the vote, endangered animals, etc.

the idea would be that you decorate one side in a way that you think fits your issue, and then on the writing side, you could write a little explanation and provide a few links for more info. i think it would be cool if everyone did all of their postcards on the same issue, plus it would be less research for each participant, in terms of providing links.

so we'd be spreading awesome craftyness, and knowledge, at the same time!

if people are interested, i'd be up for organizing (my first time!), but not until after the current What Would the Mail Carrier Think swap is complete.

this would NOT be an opportunity to bash people, or to be rude. the postcards would have to be respectful. you're using them to share your opinion with others, not to tell everyone that they're stupid if they disagree.

and anything graphic or potentially triggering (rape, abuse, etc) would need to be sent in an envelope with a warning written on it.

oh, and i'm Canadian, so this would most definitely be open to international folks. (with no limits to the number of them)

i think it would be a limit of 13, as per usual. 12 postcards seems to be everyone's limit.

EDITED TO ADD- maybe this should be under mail art, but the last one was under craft swaps. if it's in the wrong place, i'm sorry! please just let me know!

EDITED AGAIN- to add a couple of things that i forgot.
