yup, as sundance kid said, definately don't wash your hair the day of the event (even go a couple of days if you can).  you can get it wet in the shower and comb through it with you fingers, but don't use shampoo or conditioner.  probably for this style i would use some kind of volumizing mousse too.  good luck!

i think it's both things, your yarn and your tension.  with a looser tension however, i think your yarn would be fine.  i don't know how you cast on, but i always use two needles held together.  if you don't already do this you may wan to try, it may help you loosen up a bit.  of course once you do this your cast on stiches will easily fall of the needle if you are not careful on your first round.  i have no idea if this was helpful, but i hope so! Smiley
