11  Re: Big Project Stitch A-long 2012 in Needlework: Stitchalongs by Jolyon on: February 07, 2012 10:49:09 AM
Hurray! Congratulations on finishing stitchfight.  It looks immense! So very impressed.
Here is my little contribution - Ive just started my Bruce Springsteen project.  Im trying to avoid buying too many more skeins of thread so some of the colour choices are  Embarrassed however Ive started and thats the main thing.  It is going to my 4 favourite album covers.  Except I had to substitute born in the Usa for Tunnel of love because Bruce's ass looks easier to embroider than his face.  Dont worry there will be some hilarity for you though as I have to embroider his face on the Born to Run and Darkness on the edge of town covers  Embarrassed

Its nice to see a few more people joining in.  I love the piece you have done Beth8144; what a lovely idea.

I have finally started with my pinks.

and here is my first heart.

I am enjoying using them way more than I anticipated.  I think because it isnt a huge project so I get them done quite quickly (Im on one and a half so far) and there is still plenty of creativity in choosing the patterns.  They are kind of fair isle style hearts!
Im hoping to be finished by the end of next week and then I will be moving on to blacks and blues (as well as consulting you all about how best donate the heart piece to a breast cancer charity).
Anyway keep up the good work its lovely to see all your progress Smiley

Oops I meant to post my almost finished 'green' project with that last post.
Here it is - just the bag clasps on the black bag to finish and the back of course!

The photograph quality isnt great as I just took it quickly on my mobile.  Ill try and get a nicer shot once Ive finished the back (and the bag)

16  Re: 2011 DeStash-Along in Craftalongs by Jolyon on: December 22, 2011 01:00:03 PM
I haven't been active for a while in this thread because my internet and my creativity ground to a halt, but as I am between homes and needing to downsize my stash a bit.  I am back on the de-stashing wagon.
I am pretty pleased with this tote as it has conquered my fear (for the meantime) of cutting my vintage/vintage print fabrics.  I am frightened of wasting them, but to be honest it is better that they are used than just left sitting in my suitcase of fabric.
Hope you like it too:

I really like how the prints compliment each other and I made it with a square bottom so I can fit 2 big hard back books and more into it if I wanted to Smiley

I have got the beginnings of a quilt to post as well; which is destined for my lounge when I eventually get everything sorted.  Again it is using the vintage fabrics I have been hoarding.  Once I get a decent (maybe natural light) photograph of it I will get it posted.  It is very much a WIP because it needs to be a bit bigger and I need to sort a backing for it.  I dont want to buy anything though because I am still very aware of that whole suitcase of dress fabrics!

17  Re: bits and pieces... in Needlework: Completed Projects by Jolyon on: December 13, 2011 09:51:51 AM
I just wanted to update and show both of these finished off.
The bird piece hasn't had any thing more done to it just neatening up the edges/back (But I think it looks nicer without all that scruffy fabric round it)

And the Oh Hello piece I decided to put the french knot colours in and I am really happy with the result makes it pop a little bit more.

Thanks for looking.  Im off to watch watership down now and fill in a bit more of my next piece Wink

18  Abundance of Embroidery thread craftalong-2011 Ongoing in Craftalongs by Jolyon on: December 11, 2011 12:29:12 PM

I would like to harness fellow embroiderers/cross stitchers in a mission to rid/lower our supplies of certain overstocked colours (so that we can have room to purchase more) Wink.

My hope for this stitch along is that we can inspire each other with themes and creations so that we can all have perfect thread selections.
We can also admire each others lovely work.

Who is with me?

19  bits and pieces... in Needlework: Completed Projects by Jolyon on: December 09, 2011 06:21:32 AM
Hey all,
I havent had proper internet access for around 6 months and although I havent been terribly constructive I do have a few things to share so without further waffling here is where I am at (apologies for some of the photo quality they are taken on my mobile)
First of all is this little embroidery of a blue tit in an ornate birdcage.  It started life destined for the hoopla swap, but as my partner dropped out I decided to finish it for my self.  I still need to finish the back, but like most creative types I am terrible at finishing projects.

The colours and detail probably are nicer in person, but you get the idea..
Then I have two works in progress
The Tiger Who Came to Tea (based on one of my favourite childrens books)

Ive actually progressed a little further than this, but obviously forgot to take an up to date photograph before I left my flat for home.  So I will get an update posted Asap.  Ive always loved this book and the illustrations and have often had it on my interests for the hoopla swaps and so I decided after I finished the birdcage I would create one for myself.
Finally there is this little piece

I am not a massive fan of slogans, but I was inspired by some christmas cookies (yes I know :S) to do an embroidered slogan in their style.  Of course I managed to make the font too small to put 'sprinkles' on :S.  However I dont know whether to introduce some colour with some french knots in the background in various colours.... what do you think?
It will eventually read 'Oh Hello' just takes me time to finish these things...  Cheesy

20  Re: 2011 DeStash-Along in Craftalongs by Jolyon on: April 11, 2011 01:38:15 PM
I have finally finished my bag commission.  I have been working on this forever.  Well what feels like forever.  The letters are made from canvas and felt (the felt makes up the black sections) and the bag is made from a red drill and lined with checked cotton.  I had originally planned to make a shirt from the checked cotton, but I feel it is a little too busy for me even though I love checks. Working with drill, felt and canvas was a big no-no where the final sewing on of the letters was concerned.  I chose canvas because I thought it would fray less, but it still split and allowed pieces to slip through the satin stitching.  I also made the handles a tad slim, but I hope it will hold up to wear and tear.
In total I used about 1 x 1 metre of drill, 3 skeins of black embroidery thread, 20cm square of black felt and a 10cmx145cm strip of white canvas.

The letters arent that wonky it just looks it from how the bag is hanging.
The initials stand for F.C United of Manchester Art department.  They are a small club set up by fans of Manchester United who were against the Glazers buying the club.  The art department refers to the recipient of the bag,  just in case you are interested Wink.
