41  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Lace Leaf Capelet and Danica from Winter '05 Knitty on: June 18, 2010 04:27:23 AM
I've been busy working on lots of knitting swap projects and now that they're finally all arrived at their new homes, I can share pictures!

I made this Lace Leaf Capelet for my partner in the Yarnies Scavenger Hunt.  I used about 400 yards of super bulky wool which created a warm, heavy capelet that would be perfect to wear in cool fall evenings or throughout winter.  It was a pretty quick knit, despite its size, and the pattern was pretty easy to follow.

For the Be Awesome swap, I knitted Danica (from Knitty's Winter '05 issue).  I settled down for a weekend and between the end of work on Friday and the evening on Sunday, I had finished!

It's knit with three skeins of Patons SWS in the colorway "Natural Earth" which created a scarf that was about 5 1/2 feet long.  Though I had some trepidation about the pattern before beginning, I found that it was really easy and fun to knit once I got going!

42  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / (new!) WIP Wednesday 6/16 - Show off your in progress knitting projects here! on: June 16, 2010 04:32:25 AM
I thought we could start up a new tradition here on the knitting board that celebrates our works in progress!  You know how there's a Fiber Friday and Toybox Tuesday?? Don't we deserve our very own day to celebrate our projects, too?

So, let's start up a new tradition of WIP Wednesdays! What better way to learn about your fellow Craftster knitters and to encourage and support one another through our WIPs.

We'll also be joined on WIP Wednesday by the crochet board! (Their thread is linked so that any of you lucky and talented cross-disciplined fiber artists can participate there as well. Smiley )

My contribution for this week is a pair of Kai-Mei socks.  The pattern is by Cookie A in the book Sock Innovation.  I cast on this past Saturday and finished up on Sunday and all was well and good until I tried to put the sock on.  Moving a 7-month pregnant belly around and out of the way is almost impossible.  Through an act of contortion and the use of a cleverly placed webcam, I snapped possibly the worst photo ever of the coolest sock ever.

The lace panel starts at the gusset of one side and gradually moves across the top of the foot.  It's a really cool pattern and I love it, though I'm not sure I'm too excited about casting on the second since getting to my feet won't be easy for another few months still. Smiley

What's your WIP for the week?
43  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Vote on our next Knitting Challenge! (Poll closes @ 12pm EST 6/30) on: June 14, 2010 10:43:05 AM
Okay, it's time for our next Knitting Board Challenge!  What should our theme be?

Knit Flicks

Knitting inspired by a movie, the movie theater, famous starts, Hollywood, Bollywood or anywhere in between.

Future Knitters

This should be an easy challenge for everyone! Knit something for a baby, post it in the challenge.  Perhaps you'll win a prize AND have a cute baby dressed or wrapped in knitting!

Scrooged

Spend $10 or less on your entry for this challenge!  Reusable materials (needles, stitch markers, etc.) won't count towards your total but yarn (including stash diving) does.  What can YOU do with $10?

One-ders

Another easy challenge! Use one skein wisely to create something magical, beautiful or unique!  The only catch is that you can't use more than ONE skein of yarn.  (Perfect for those odd balls we've all got laying around.)

Heres the deal:  I know that there are a lot of you who think that swapping sounds like fun, youre tempted to try, but then, you chicken out.  You think, what if my crafting isnt as good as my partner's?  What if I screw up?  What if I dont understand how to do this no matter how many times Ive read the swapping guidelines?  So many what ifs!  This is your opportunity to get your feet wet in the swapping pool with folks that are in the same boat!  This is your chance to ask all of the questions that youve ever needed answers to! Everyone will be brand new swappers, so no one should feel like they are asking silly questions or feel like they don't have enough experience. Some really amazing things came from the previous newbie swaps and some new friends were made.  So, come on inthe waters fine!  I will be your guide through the world of swapping.  If you have any questions or concerns throughout this swap, please PM me or post in the forum!  There are some rules that must be followed in order to have an optimal swapping experience.  Some are Craftsters rules, some are mine. If you feel that you cannot abide by the rules of this swap please don't join!!

My rules:
1. Once you have been accepted into the swap, you must post to the thread with a brief bio.  No details such as last names or addresses of course.
2.  You must post at least once per week in the thread.  When we move over to the gallery, you must continue to post once per week until you and your partner have both sent and received.  Failure to do so will result in a 'poor communication' comment in your feedback. If you signup but do not post in the thread in a timely manner, I reserve the right to drop you from the swap.
3.  You must communicate with your partner.  If I receive notification from your partner that you are out of communication, this will result in a 'poor communication' comment in your feedback.
4.  When sending pm's to me, please label them as 'Newbie Swap Round 13' in the subject line.
5.  Posting photos in the gallery is a rule of this swap.  Failure to do so will result in a comment in your feedback of 'did not complete swap requirements'.

Feedback:
Feedback will not be given until both partners have sent and received.

Craftster's Rules:

1.  If sending within the US, you must use a Delivery Confirmation Number (DC#).  If outside of the US, please get a receipt.  The DC# and/or receipt must be sent to the organiser and your partner.

2.  When you receive your swap package, you must notify both myself and your partner and post photos in the gallery.

You will be crafting 1 medium and 2 smalls for your partner.  If you want to send more, please discuss this with your partner.  A guide to size:
medium 2-3 hours  and a small is less than 2 hours.

Things to keep in mind:
The more flexible you are in the questionnaire, the easier it will be to match you up with a partner.

47  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Winter Pine Sachets - from the Purl Bee on: April 18, 2010 07:18:46 AM
I spent this weekend knitting these lovely tree sachets as part of an angel package I'm sending.  The pattern is from The Purl Bee (you can find it here).  The original pattern called for fingering weight yarn, but instead, I used worsted weight scraps leftover from knitting diaper soakers.

The pattern was a quick knit (about 1 1/2 hours each, including all the finishing time) and I think they turned out super cute!

This was turned out to be a great destashing project.  I only used odds and ends of skeins for the actual knitting, but I also used about half of a bag of crystal fill I had from our wedding (almost three years ago!).  I filled each sachet with dried lavender, too, which I have in abundance.

I have a ton of dried herbs and a huge stash of miscellaneous skeins of yarn, I think I may keep on knitting these!
48  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Fresh Fig Compote on: April 17, 2010 07:03:40 AM
Last year, one of our friends was the lucky owner of a very, very fertile fig tree.  We became the proud owners of buckets and buckets of figs but besides eating them raw, we weren't quite sure what to do with them.  I hastily froze them and forgot about them.

Until this morning.

Figuring that I needed to do SOMETHING with them soon (as it's been several months), I decided to take a stab at making a compote.  (I will also admit to the compote being an excuse to buy vanilla ice cream, but that's a different story.)

I started with several small bags of frozen figs.  You can see that I really did just wash and freeze them.. I hadn't even removed the stems.

I started them off at a medium heat to help thaw them.  Once they began thawing, I turned the heat down to a simmer and began (bravely) picking the figs out, destemming them and returning them to their brethren.

After they were thawed, they began cooking down nicely.  I added about 2/3 of a cup of sugar, stirred and let it sit for several more minutes. (In hindsight, I would be a little more reserved when adding sugar next time.)

Of course, a couple minutes went by and it needed a small taste test and I found that it was a bit sweeter than I had anticipated.  I added a splash of vanilla extract, cinnamon and ground cardamom and, again, let it simmer for several minutes.

It thickened up quite nicely and now it has just the right amount of sweetness for a nice sized bowl of vanilla ice cream!

49  KNITTING / Knitalongs / Cookie A KAL? on: April 13, 2010 02:58:10 PM
Maybe I'm the only one, and maybe I'm not, but is there anyone else that would be interested in a Cookie A KAL?

Cookie A is the designer behind popular Knitty sock patterns such as Monkey, Pomatomus, and a semi-new book of sock knitting + sock designing how-to, Sock Innovation.  (I just found out there's a new book due out this spring, too!)

I think this KAL would be perfect for spring-summer knitting and there's enough variety that it could be really fun! Anyone else interested?
