1  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Beads: Discussion and Questions / multi strand math help! on: October 28, 2008 01:31:27 PM
Hi guys,
I'm planning on making that necklace from the opening scene in breakfast a tiffany's, the six strands of pearls with the diamond centre piece (only i'm going for four stands of plastic 12mm pearl beads and using a vintage brooch).
The bit im battling with is how long to make each strand, as they get longer further out.  How do i work it out, I know trial and error could be a goer but i'm a little pressed for time.  Help!

2  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Discussion and Questions / Thoughts on felt? on: September 07, 2008 12:37:29 AM
Hello lovely craftsters,
I was wondering if I could trouble you for your thoughts in using felt for a small messenger like bag.
You see ive been inspired by this bag: http://rushfaster.com.au/product.php?pProductID=PORTFOLIOH-A4-H-S
And I do love the Burdastyle Diana bag.  and so my ever so cunning plan is to use some nice dark grey felt and bright red felt, to make the Diana Bag, and to take it on my upcoming OS holiday.
So this brings me to my question: is felt gonna be ok for this? cos I've made a camera cozy out of (cheap) acrylic felt and it went all pilly and gross, and I intend to be using this bag 24/7 for a month. so perhaps I should ask what kinda felt should i be looking for, or does all felt go pilly and gross when its over handled?
3  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / rainbow scarf on: August 14, 2008 05:26:28 PM
After being inspired by everkutz crocheted rainbow scarf:
I thought I'd try knitting my own....

any thoughts? I think if i knitted it again i would definitely do some orange (but lincraft only had crappy dusty orange coloured wool)
4  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Vintage Swimsuit Help! on: July 10, 2008 03:25:22 AM
Well Ive been lusting over this http://www.pinupgirlclothing.com/skirted-swimsuit-retro-swimsuit.html for ages and then I saw this http://blogs.trb.com/features/consumer/shopping/blog/swimsuit.jpg in the sex and the city movie.  I wants it! and so I was thinking i could totally make this, but Im scared so i thought I'd outline my plan and i was wondering if you lovely craftsters could give me some hints on working with the dreaded lycra!

Okies well i was gonna make it a two piece and use the burdastyle bikini pattern for the bottoms
then for the top...
1. make a tube top with the halter strap sewn into seams
question - how do i work out how big around it should be - like measure my bust less x many inches? how do i work out x to account for the stretch in the lyrca?
2. ruching
question - should i ruch before or after making the tube?
3. lining
question - will bad things happen if i dont line it?

thanks guys any advice would be rad!

ps i did do a search but couldnt find anything that answered my questions
5  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / breakfast at tiffany's pattern? on: May 29, 2008 01:22:55 AM

6  CITY GUIDES FOR CRAFTSTERS / AUSTRALIA / tailor's chalk on: March 20, 2008 09:55:20 PM
ARGH i need to get this out....and you guys understand these things

So i went to my local lincraft to get tailor's chalk....I search the isles gave up and asked the first shop assistant i find where it is...She looks at me blankly and says she doesnt know...so I wander over to the fabric counter and ask there, i get this blank look and a 'sorry what' so i explain 'tailor's chalk its for marking dots and notches when you copy a pattern on to fabric' and i get a 'sorry ive never heard of that, it could be over there, but if its not we dont sell it' (it wasnt 'over there')......barhg! seriously its like one of the most common sewing tools, does lincraft not train their staff at all? seriously what has happened to customer service these days!

so does anyone out there know where i can get some tailor's chalk in canberra? (i cant find my trusty one anywhere!)

Alternatively is there some other crazy name for it?
7  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / buttony brown sailor shorts on: February 08, 2008 05:58:37 PM
Here's my first go at the shorts pattern from burdastyle.com
i learnt that i should really pre-wash my fabrics for shrinkage no matter how excited i am about getting started *sigh*
Also i chickened out on the pockets and im still undecided about a good length (i thought the cuff would sorta cut my legs and make em look shorter), but i must say the one step button hole on my machine is amazing!
sooo any opinions, hints and tips would be awesome

8  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / vodka lamp on: October 01, 2007 12:47:18 AM
oh look theres an ordinary bottle of vanilla absolut sitting on a pile of coasters

but when the lights go out it transforms......

This is probably the bestest way ever to make pretty bottles into lamps it doesnt involve any scary glass drilling, or electrical wiring, soldering or anything ... just glue, scissors, cardboard coasters, dot light (little led thingy you can get from supermarkets) and a pretty bottle
i wish i thought of it first so heres the tute i used
