they are not discontinuing the sizzix dies. i just redid the sizzix section at the joanns i work for.. there aren't as many dies as we had before.. but there are a lot of new ones. also, we stopped selling the large sizzix machine and we're now carrying the side kick and the big side kick which i believe are more or less the same, just lighter weight : )

as for which one to use, i can't really help you there.. i hear that the cricut machine is awesome.. but i've never been able to buy one myself... farrrr too expensive for me!

5  CLOTHING / Sewing Pattern Reviews / Simplicity 3885- Jessica McClintock dress on: June 30, 2007 09:25:17 PM
After taking my boyfriend to my two proms, I made him promise me that he would take me to his. When I made him promise me this though, I didn't think about how I would get money to buy a new dress (because of course I couldn't wear one of my old dresses!!).

One day though, I was working (at Jo-Anns) and found this amazing raspberry-purple silk that was clearance for $9/yard.. ON SALE 75% OFF!! This brought it down to like 2 dollars and something a yard.... and all I could think of was prom dress!! Oh yeah, did I mention that there was a coordinating silk that was something like $6/yard on sale for 75% off too? Shawl, anyone?

I wasn't completely thrilled with the outcome (I finished about a half hour before prom). The pattern was really easy.. but since I lost a bit of weight just after I made a muslin of the dress but just before the prom, I didn't have much time to alter the final dress. Thats all right, I got a lot of compliments and it did it's job.

I would definitely recommend this pattern. It worked up fairly fast. I didn't really have any complaints whatsoever about it!!

side view.. I'm not sure what the deal with this face is though.

(I apologize if the pictures are too big.. this is my first photo post and I'm not sure how to make them smaller!!)

i work at joanns and sold a girl that same fabric the other day. she was planning on making a jumper. i thought she was crazy, but i love the way that the notes look from far away... they look ultra cute close up too! Smiley

good job!
8  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Discussion and Questions / Re: painting a bulletin board on: May 23, 2007 07:53:08 PM
i'm not sure if you have your heart set on painting it, but for my design board, we (my mother and i) have white flannel. it holds the quilt up perfectly..

just some flannel and some spray adhesive and you're good to go!

sorry, i just realized that i absolutely did NOT answer your question... i'm not sure about paint. it doesn't seem to me that the latex paint would stay on the oil based primer... could you get a piece of cork and test it out?

sorry again for my lack of knowledge... but again, flannel = fabulous!
9  IMAGE REPRODUCTION TECHNIQUES / Other Image Reproduction Techniques: Discussion and Questions / Re: iron-on transfer to a canvas? on: May 20, 2007 05:48:29 PM
that sounds like a good idea!! i might try to do the photo transfer in color and then print the photo on tracing paper in black and white... hmm, oh the ideas!

thanks a lot!
10  IMAGE REPRODUCTION TECHNIQUES / Other Image Reproduction Techniques: Discussion and Questions / iron-on transfer to a canvas? on: May 19, 2007 08:53:36 PM
for a gift, i wanted to make a photo montage of sorts on a canvas. i had thought about printing onto tracing paper and then modge-poding it onto the canvas, and then i ran across this thread.

do you think that i could print out a picture on transfer paper and then iron it onto the canvas? has anyone tried this?

thanks for any help!!  Grin
