1  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Re: New and improved 35mm slides lamp! on: March 08, 2006 09:07:36 PM
haha thanks, done, done, and done... that's what i get for trying to throw together a website in a weekend.

You should definately look into making one, although they are extremely time consuming, they're fairly simple to make and don't require many tools.  It helps to have a drill press and a shade rim that fits slides well so they're evenly space.  Thanks for your input.

I meant to post this in the housewares section... perhaps i'll try to move it

Hey all, I have fallen in love with slide lamps since the first publish of Readymade's article about them... I've been working on my own concepts, let me know your thoughts.  Found these simple shadowbox shelves and went crazy.  The slides are held in place by a string woven through all of them to stretch them tightly and evenly (WAY harder than I originally thought).  Threw in a small lamp fixture, 15watt bulb, pull chain.... and voila...

This one's 8" x 8", but I'm working on 6" x 24" now...

Also be sure to check out my brand new website, where I've started selling my lamps nationwide!

So sorry for being so unresponsive, its become quite a hecktic semester for my engineering classes, having even had time to craft : (.... Anywho, Yeah, what he said was pretty much what I did, although i used the speakers from the computer speakers b/c the ones in the boombox couldnt handle the power from the amp and sounded real bad.  it's hard to get a straightforward tutorial for this one b/c every set of speakers and boombox will vary drastically.  what my original plans were, was to somehow wire the a phono plug (the one that plugs into the ipod) into where the tape signal comes into and use all of the existing boombox electronics.  That didnt work out to well so I had to improvise.  I suppose it would work almost as well if you somehow rigged up just an ipod holder on the boombox and used an 'itrip' device to just broadcast the ipod to the boombox radio.  But that soultion wasnt challenging enough.  heh.  Anywho, Hopefully i can get back to crafting soon.  Feel free to aske questions if you want to attempt this.

Everyone cool it, the fish is no longer in the lava lamp, i got sick of cleaning it and had a better idea of what to do with the lava lamp than putting a fish in it.  I"ll post it when im through with it and link to the thread here.  Izmir is now in a 2 gallon aquarium, so consider it a compromise, I cant afford anything larger nor do i have room for it.

Izmir takes a trip to the beach:

I'll take pics as i make it to explain how to do it.  Thanks for the positive feedback!

Thank sI found them in the haight yesterday and finished my lamp off last night.  I couldnt find any silver rings tho, so I used gold ones. It looks fine. I want to get a throw-away slide camera now so I can take my own pix. The ones I used were kind of dark.

post a pic! I'm sure everyone wants to see it!

Hey, worked on this today, still a work in progress but its functioning... which is something to be said.  Got this old toshiba boombox from goodwill and gutted the entire thing.  Put new speakers and amplifier in there from a set of sony speakers that came with my computer.  Had to enclose the power button but I'm working on getting an external switch... for now i have to take out one of the C-batteries.  Has pretty good sound for an old system from... the 80's? 90's? i'm not really sure.
