331  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Re: sustainable/eco-friendly/vegan-friendly yarns + fibers on: July 26, 2005 02:08:51 PM
Sweet jumping jesus on a pogo stick! That post-lifecycle silk yarn place features freeze-dried indigo dye vats at $30 for 8g, that's waaay to expensive!

Especially when us henna mudslingers know you can get 25g of it for $6.50 from hennapage.com Roll Eyes Dye your harn, dye your skin!

Also, I know that natural henna gives a beautiful orange-brown to hair, skin, nails, and anything else made out of keratin Smiley Has anyone tried this on yarn yet?

My boyfriend thinks I'm a nut, now, because in all the horror movies and serious SVU episodes, I spend half the time trying to mentally pattern what one of the main characters is wearing Grin
333  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Islamic Knitting? on: July 26, 2005 11:52:45 AM
Ok, so my dad is from Iran, and next summer (god and the political climate willing) almost the whole family will be visiting over there for the first time ever. I've got 5 aunts, 2 uncles and immumerable cousins of various type and size to meet Grin The only aunt I've met so far is my aunt Soghra, who tried, despite language barriers and different handed-ness, to teach me to knit almost ten years ago. I recently (about half a year ago) actually went out and learned, and have a hat, a sock, a scarf and a blanket under my belt now, but I'd really like to make something for Soghra and my other aunts for when I go. I was thinking some kind of a lighter scarf or cowl that they could use to cover their hair, I saw this and got the idea: LINK, YO! but I'd like to get some more variation in my gifts. That one, I know, would look awesome on Soghra and be just her style Smiley but from what I hear, my family is pretty progressive (to the point of occasional jail time Roll Eyes) so I'd like something more modern for the cousins who are in their mid-twenties like me Smiley Any ideas, or patterns I can ab/use?
