The wings are real, they're from a cicada...

Heres a little closer....At least you can see the wings and more of the face...

Thanks, I'm glad you like it....I get what you mean about the creepy/beautiful thing....All compliments of the nut...The walnut idea just sort of presented itself...I had a summer in the woods and the more time I spent there the more things appeared to be not what they appear to be Wink

As far as packing away my art supplies~I'm not sure where that one came from...I guess I was at a point of mental house cleaning and I thought using primarily only what I found would bring me to a different place with my art as well.  It was much easier than I imagined- and was an unexpectedly  great reminder that art can be made anywhere with anything...

What was your potato idea? Sounds very interesting....

That rocks! I like the colors too. I'm assuming it is wet felted? Did you stitch the strap on? Sorry for so many ?- I needle felt and wonder about the construction of the wet felted things~ Very cool.

Thanks so much!!
They do carve really easily. If you grow them it takes about 6 months for them to dry to the point of being carvable...(once you hear the seeds rattle when you shake it) If you're into gardening, they grow easily and prolifically....But you can buy them places too... A lot of times you can find them at farmers markets...I've never looked on line to try to buy them but there is a whole world of gourd obsessed people~shouldn't be hard to find~Sorry----back to your ?. Once they are dried out you can carve a hole and pull out the seeds...they form a weird brainy looking pod thing..then you can sand down the inside. Its basically like carving a dried out pumpkin.. Wink

Last summer I camped and packed away my art supplies...I decided I'd use only what I found or grew for my art.  My original idea was to carve this gourd as a big lantern....but the more I carved the more it was clearly meant to be a dwelling~
As it turns out-I did use some fabric scraps and battery operated lights....

Here is a close-up....The gourd (which are great fun to carve~and sand very easily) is a bushel gourd...the head is a black walnut shell...hair~ basil root...the wings (if you look very closely past the crappy pic quality) are cicada wings...interior gourd carpeting is some type of lichen....moldy wallpaper-complements of the winter elements...

Here is a shot in the dark....(sorry for the quality-or lack there of....)
