1  HOME SWEET HOME / Interior Decorating: Discussion and Questions / Remodeling? Don't forget about lighting on: July 15, 2015 11:02:13 PM
Are you in the midst of a remodeling project? If so, make sure you dont forget the lighting. For whatever reason, lighting is often overlooked when it comes to remodeling projects which is too bad because lighting is one of the most cost effective ways to dramatically improve the look of any room in the house. Not only does good lighting look good, it improves your day-to-day life. Natural light, can kill bacteria in your home. Natural light is also proven to elevate your mood and increase your productivity. Light in the right places, whether its natural or artificial can make certain tasks a whole lot easier. Here are some tips for incorporating better lighting into your remodel

Natural light

Natural light makes any room look larger and more open. If youre planning a major remodel, then plan to incorporate large, floor-to-ceiling windows to really brighten up the space. For many years, skylights have fallen out of favor. But according to realtors, skylights are making a comeback and more and more home buyers are influenced by them. Skylights are a great way to bring natural light into a room that doesnt share any walls with the outdoors. Think about when the light will be shining in different parts of your home. If you like to rise with the sun, for instance, then plan on large, east facing windows in your bedroom. Will the sun create a glare on your television or computer monitor during times of the day when you will be trying to use them? These are things youll want to think about. If you love to curl up on a couch with a book in the afternoon, then a wall of windows in a west facing room is a great idea.

Artificial light

If a limited budget makes a larger scale remodel impossible, there are still ways to improve the lighting in your home without having new windows or skylights installed. Youll want to find ways to maximize the amount of artificial light in your home. If youve got an open space in a room, put a lamp there. You can also make use of track lighting or recessed down lights to get light into those dark spots in your rooms. You can also replace your light fixtures. For instance, you can replace your chandelier with a new one that has more bulbs. If youve got lamp shades that dim the light too much, you can replace them with shades that are more translucent. In your kitchen, you can always use under cabinet lighting to add more light even if all of your wall space is taken up by cabinets.

Having a very small space is not that bad.  Smiley
