11  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Tips for Participating in Craft Fairs / Re: cost of craft fair, tent, general questions! please help! on: April 23, 2006 10:29:31 AM
yeah, it does sound like a good deal.  people are correct about advertising though!  a lot of times, i also try to do some promo work for shows i'm doing, because you never know if the organizers will hit every place.  i post all over the place, like on craigslist, and my state's craftster thread, i take the info about the show and email it out to all my friends/family, and i see if the organizers have a flyer made up, and if not, I sometimes make my own up, and make copies (often 4 to a page, little ones) to put up in coffeeshops, etc.

in my experience, i have noticed different attitudes from organizers.  some do a really great job of advertising and getting the word out, some seem to think that at least part of that should come from the vendors.  the way i see it is, as long as i'm putting all the work into it, i want to do all i can to make sure everyone knows about the event!

Pittsburgh, PA

The Mattress Factory is indeed a cool place and they are having a craft sale on May 13...

http://www.mattress.org/index.cfm?event=ShowFeature&id=3

Also, there is Construction Junction, which is a store in a big warehouse that sells used/surplus building materials and has a gorgeous gallery space on the second floor that is huge and often used for various purposes, like Pittsburgh's biggest indie craft show, the Handmade Arcade!  Every year they have a "Festival of the Salvage Arts" which is a lot of fun.

I know it doesn't look like much from the outside, but it is an awesome place!

I've gone back and looked at projects that I worked on maybe 5 years ago with rubber cement, and it's totally discolored the paper!  Totally sad.

I agree that the glue dots are a good idea.
