1  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Craftalongs / CLOSED: Thing-A-Day Feb 2016 Craftalong on: January 19, 2016 11:54:42 PM

(This is just a silly doodle from a few years ago. I made it when my other thing didn't work out.)

Did anyone ever participate in the Thing-A-Day challenges? If you are familiar then you know what I'm talking about, if you're not then a quick explanation.

Thing-A-Day was an online challenge where participants would make one thing every day and post it - although you did not have to post every day, you could wait and post a few at a time. The things could be anything; art (even doodles, as in my example), crafts, DIY/home improvement/organizing, cooking/baking, even writing. The rules weren't hard and fast, it was a challenge not a competition. One of the fun parts was seeing the variety of creativity and talent from the other participants.

Ideally, each day's item would be one complete item but it could also be part of a larger item as long as each section done per day was something you could document. For example, sanding a piece of furniture could be one day, the next day could be painting and then the day after could be embellishing. You just post a picture of each step. Also, each thing should take only about 30 minutes. It could be a little less or a little longer but it was meant to be something everyone could do every day without taking up a lot of time.

It was always done in February because it's the shortest month and also because people might still be trying to keep up with their New Year's resolutions to get stuff done. I tried it a few times but never got past 10 days. I was going to try it again this year but I discovered that they stopped doing it a couple years ago.

It would be good for knocking out your 50 things, destashing, or for those who do the abandoned art or just motivating yourself to make stuff. There could certainly be overlap with other craftalongs. Again, it's a personal challenge not a competition but if someone finishes 29 days (bonus day this year!) maybe we could agree to send them something we made (that's not set aside for someone else) or make a badge or even do a swap. We'll see.

I guess we can do this like the 50 things craftalong and make a post with one big list of participants with a link to their list post which you then update with links to your things as you post them. I hope that makes sense?

I am on limited internet but I figured out my problems accessing on my phone and will try to take my laptop with me to someplace where I can use the wifi more often to help keep this updated but please bear with me as I'm new at organizing this sort of thing.

2  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / June Dotee Swap - Sequined Seahorse on: August 17, 2015 11:16:41 PM
I made this heavily beaded and sequinned Seahorse for DearBluebird in the June dotee swap. I wanted it to be a little reminiscent of a leafy sea dragon so I used the organza (?) for fins. I also picked a batik fabric for the body. Then I just went crazy with the beads and sequins. It was actually my second attempt at a seahorse, I had to scrap the first attempt at a fabric mosaic when it started falling apart on me.

3  NEWS AND DISCUSSION ABOUT CRAFTSTER / Introduce Yourself / Long time lurker on: October 31, 2014 01:35:22 PM
I just realized that I never introduced myself back when I joined. I have lurked here a lot over the years, a lot of crafty pins seem to lead here so I'd end up following a pin and going down the Craftster rabbit hole. I decided to join during one of those forays back in February but I still haven't posted much. I keep thinking "soon" I will post all my crafts and I would like to get more involved but I am making myself finish some home organizing projects before I commit to much, like swaps.

I am one of the craft ADD types, I have a lot of interests - things I've tried, things I want to try. My main interests are Papier Mache and polyclay sculpting, wire jewelry and sewing. In the past I used to knit a lot but nothing too fancy, since I live in a hot place (not Hades, but pretty darn close) I don't have much use for knitted stuff so it fell by the wayside. I have a coworker with goats who gave me a bunch of fiber so I have an interest in trying more fiber crafts. I'm also a big nerd so I like anything sciencey or science fiction and fantasy related, including anime.

I'm working on getting my 15 posts in to be able to swap but I think I will wait until after the first of the year since everything is always crazy and I'm still working on getting organized. But I may have to try a craftalong or something before then.
