1  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Craftalongs / Re: Thing-A-Day Feb 2017 Craftalong on: February 22, 2017 02:38:08 AM

(image is a fish care calendar page I drew out as one of my 'things' last February)

Last year Wile E Songdog hosted this craftalong, and since she hasn't been on in a while I'm happy to get it rolling this year!

Thing-A-Day is a special craftalong that only runs during the month of February. Our goal is to do something creative every day and take a picture to share! These projects should take around 30 minutes, although they can be longer or slightly shorter if you want. The rules are very loose as this is a personal challenge and not any kind of competition. Putting work into a longer-term project also counts towards your thing for a day - for instance, last year some of my days were just cutting out triangle pieces for a quilt (which I haven't touched since then, aaaaaa).

Projects can be as diverse as a painting, a snow sculpture, a granny square, a batch of funny-shaped pancakes, arranging your bookshelf by color, or patching your old jeans! Honestly it is up to you what you'd like to count as your "thing" for any given day. Creativity comes in many shades.

If you'd like to participate, make a post where your list will go, and then you can update it with links and/or thumbnail pics throughout the month. I'll have a masterpost of everyone's lists.

Let's brainstorm! I for one desperately need to get back to my quilt that I started one year ago, and I'd also like to do some coloring book pages.

Thanks for starting this up again. I am on limited internet and knew I wouldn't have time for it. I've been trying to get stuff done around my house so I can eventually get better internet. I got a chance to check in and was glad to see the thread. I look forward to seeing what everyone has done.
2  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Re: Strange Doll Swap... on: May 11, 2016 03:37:05 AM
I had to take a couple months away for the flu and trying to catch up with everything after the flu but I'm back and would be interested in this swap.

And speaking of strange dolls with teeth, anyone familiar with Fugglers? http://www.fuggler.com/

Sorry, I disappeared for a while, got a bad flu in March, my fever topped out and 103.7. I'm pretty sure it killed some brain cells. Right after that I went into a sinus infection and then have just been trying to catch up with everyday life and work since then. Since no one kept up anything for March I just changed the title back. Thanks again for sticking with it through February.

I think we should continue this for March as maybe the one thing a week in March?

I enjoy having a small goal...as soon as my partners receive, I will post all of the stuff I made, probably in the 50 Projects thread but with small pics on my list...I was busy all of February! Grin

dulcet--your coloring page is beautiful!!

I have no idea what Ghibli is but I like the black thing that looks like a sprite!  I had those when I was a kid!

If people want to keep doing it as a "thing a week" that's fine by me. Do we start a new thread or just change the title of this one?

I think the idea of the small goal is to just get you to do something and get over your mental blocks/artist blocks. Like they tell you when you want to start exercising or declutter/clean and they tell you to start small.

Speaking of decluttering, I am going to continue doing one decluttering and organizing thing a day to work towards my organizing of my craft hoard goal. I did try to do some during Feb, especially on those days I wasn't really into crafting. I sorted and tossed a couple boxes worth of papers and plan to scan and toss some more things and file those papers I must keep. When I say "tossed", I mean recycled because I care about the planet.

Also, the little black thing is called a Soot Sprite, it's from "Spirited Away".

I appreciate all the feedback. I updated my list post on the first page but I am still behind on pictures.

I did a lot of adult coloring books for some of my things when I didn't have any other ideas. I did a couple meals that were sort of experiments, no recipes, and they worked out pretty well. I had a few days, my busiest work days* that I did not do a "thing". I did a few things that I didn't count because they were failed attempts for my craft swap. I ended up with more unfinished objects since some things were taking longer and some things I needed something extra that I could not find or did not have in order to finish. I started a woven wall hanging on the last day but it was taking too long so I didn't get that finished either but I will definitely finish it soon.

*Yes, I am a veterinary technician. I work emergency and I also do inventory and some bookkeeping. So yes, it can be stressful, busy, sad and happy and frustrating but I do love it even when it drives me crazy.

If you didn't finish the craftalong, didn't make it past a few days, skipped several days or didn't even start; don't worry about it. The whole point is to try to get your creative juices flowing and just DO something. It's fun to see what the other people do and it helps inspire you.

I used my things to experiment with some stuff I haven't done much of or tried at all but wanted to attempt. I found that I really like kumihimo and weaving and want to keep playing with those. I also learned that I really need to concentrate on organizing my craft hoard so I don't drive myself crazy trying to find stuff that I know I have ... somewhere.

I am going to cut back on the everyday thing but I am going to try and do a once a week thing.

Oh, here is one picture I have uploaded of the stuff I made for the Studio Ghibli craft swap. If you are not familiar with Ghibli, yes it's a little weird.

Thanks for participating everyone. I plan to go back through and look at stuff everyone else made again but I did want to say that Wulf's Dodo is amazing!

I received my package but I have been bad. I keep forgetting to take pictures and when I remember I am not at home to take the pictures. I received a beautifully embroidered pillow with a scene from Howl's Moving Castle and a little clay Kodama from Audania.

Audania if you have pictures and want to post them please go ahead, I've been kind of out of it lately.

As usually happens with this thing, I end up getting busier than I expect and then other stuff comes up. I have only missed a couple days but I haven't been able to keep up with picture taking and posting. So I need to get caught up soon. I had kind of a personal setback a week ago when I learned I have a potentially serious eye problem but since I had to find a new doctor that takes my medical insurance I haven't been able to get all the additional testing done so I've been in a funk.

Anyway, I really appreciate you guys going along with this and keeping it going. It has at least helped inspire me to get creative and work on some projects.

Thanks

My best laid plans have gone awry. I have done something every day except Monday and Tuesday because they turned out to be hellish work days. I had to go in during the day Monday to do some paperwork, then I went back for a night shift that was non-stop craziness. I did get to resuscitate some c-section puppies, maybe not creative, but I think I'll count it. By the time I left, 2 and a half hours after my shift was supposed to be over my back, feet, knees ... well, everything hurt. I couldn't even sleep right away because I was in so much pain. I spent the day Tuesday too exhausted to attempt anything and had to go back to work for my double shift and here I am at a finally quiet moment around 5 am attempting an update. But I am just too tired to list my stuff or post pics so I am going to hope I can find some free time later.

Thanks for keeping this going and everything is great, I really wish I could sit in a blanket fort and eat some chocolate lava cake right now.

AIMR, I figure this Craftalong is a good time to experiment, since it doesn't have to be perfect and it's not for a swap so I don't have to fuss over it.

Last night I worked on a sketch but I wasn't feeling well so didn't spend 30 minutes on it.
