21  CITY GUIDES FOR CRAFTSTERS / AUSTRALIA / Re: where to get labels for your goods done. on: September 08, 2005 08:18:03 PM
I looked locally, found that they just go overseas to china and charge you double what they pay to manufacture labels.

So I ended up going directly to china. But if you want local, here are some I found,

http://www.wovenlabelsdirect.com.au/ - Surry Hills
Thats Mine Pty Ltd Brookvale NSW ph: (02) 9905 6388
Cash's (Australia) Pty Ltd Mascot NSW ph: (02) 9669 5233 (I go to them for my care labels, I'd say they do actual labels, unsure about quantities)

Not sure about any of their quantities but I hope you find someone who can do it. (I had to order 4000 hangtags when I did it direct from China, gah!)
22  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Tips for Participating in Craft Fairs / Re: Newbie at fairs... does it get catty? on: September 01, 2005 05:10:01 AM
I have gotten the evil eye from some surrounding stalls at a local market I go to every weekend. If it's a slow day, and you make more sales than them, they give you the evils.
But it depends what the people around you are like. Usually you get someone on one side who takes up every inch of their stall and gets all snooty if a quarter of a wheel is on their side of the line. Then you'll get someone behind your stall who is helpful nice and even offers the newspaper for you to read, will give advice and be generally nice to you.
Not always though.

I wouldn't be worried. You're there for the same reason as everyone else and they can't say anything if you happen to do well. It's not your fault.  Grin
23  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Tips for Participating in Craft Fairs / Re: flea market questions on: September 01, 2005 05:05:05 AM
I have a stall at a local popular market every weekend. I am attempting to get into the fashion market where people are willing to pay a lot. But for now, the one I go to, a lot of people show surprise at prices for handmade goods. There are a fair few handmade clothing stalls too. So I don't imagine any would do so great.
We barely ever make our stall cost of $50 back. When we do it kind of makes the day a complete flop.

I guess we've only done it 4 times. And will keep on trying until we get into the better market. (which is also way over regulated)

It's useful if you have the right type of product. People like accessories and nic-naks. My hobo bags and clutches sell like hot cakes compared to the odd item of clothing. I even strategically place all the items of clothing to draw people in to the stall but every week the new favourite (admired but usually never bought) item changes.

The consumer makes it darn hard at markets.
My advice- keep at it. I've started losing money and I still keep trying, maybe it's just a matter of becoming established.
24  CITY GUIDES FOR CRAFTSTERS / AUSTRALIA / Glebe stall consign on: August 31, 2005 06:54:22 AM
I currently have a stall every weekend at Glebe markets in Sydney, soon, Paddington, but Glebe currently.
I would be happy to help out a fellow craftster who wants to consign with me for a market stall since I am there every week as it is. I am taking on some other peoples items and thought I'd post here to see if anyone was interested.
I currently sell my handmade clothing line there. So to fit in with a theme, I'd like to sell handmade clothing, cards, jewellery...anything really, as long as it's crafted by you.

I went to Cabramatta the other day in search of fabric. It's not too scary.
Plenty of fabric, all a bit too generic for me though. But worth a look if you're after some plains and chiffons.

Regarding sequins, I think there is a place on King St called Marie something. She has beads and sequins and things. I was driving through on the way back from doing a stall at Glebe markets and I thought of this post, and that I was going to remember the name. But I only remembered half of it.

I just know the store has signs saying sequins pasted all over the windows.
27  CITY GUIDES FOR CRAFTSTERS / AUSTRALIA / Re: Australian Distro / Consignment Site on: June 20, 2005 01:21:19 AM
I'm interested, i'm in Sydney and run a handmade fashion label. It would be good to have more choice in Australian disto's/consignment stores. I don't always feel comfortable with idea of sending my stock to the US to be photographed and sold. It's very far away and there's the exchange rates and other associated costs to worry about when it's overseas, so more local distros would be great.

Fashion label, everything is handmade and we're based in Sydney. The range is always getting bigger, and we're now donating 10% of every sale to the RSPCA.

I'm from Sydney. I run Sixonesix, which is a fashion label, all handmade. It's good to have some people from the same place Smiley
