1  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Purplish Snowball Quilt for Baby on: July 14, 2008 09:33:54 AM
Hi Everyone:

I don't usually get to share pics since I don't have a dig camera  Roll Eyes, but I gave this baby blanket to a good friend for her baby shower and someone kindly took a few pics for me.  Its not perfect but hopefully baby won't mind. Smiley

The pattern is a snowball block, the whole thing is 100% cotton flannel and for that reason I didn't put any batting in since I figured it would be warm enough on its own.  The colours are really intense, which doesn't show up terribly well in the pics, but I think the closeup picture gives you a better idea of the colours.  I knew their baby room was lavender and I wanted it to match somewhat.  My favourite part, I think, is the backing fabric.  Smiley

Yay! I finished something quilty! Smiley  It's very nice to do something small and quick, considering my current "real" quilt project I started 3 years ago...  Roll Eyes

Thanks for looking!

2  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / inc/dec in pattern? on: November 15, 2007 09:35:58 AM
I have a few stitch dictionaries and I would like to play around with using some of the different stitches in hats, mitts etc.  However, I need some guidance on how to increase/decrease lace or cable patterns (or just really any textured stitch patterns) that would let me do the shaping without messing up the stitch pattern.  Does anyone know of any good resources/tuts on this?

thanks!  Smiley
3  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Question: Yarn Sub for DiC Shrug? on: August 13, 2007 12:23:16 PM
Hi Craftsters:

Recently, I made the "dream in colour" shrug pictured here:

I love it, and I'd like to make one for my mother. However, she lives in a sunny warm place and I don't know if a 100% merino wool shrug is practical.  Problem is, the Dream In Colour yarn is beautiful, and I really enjoyed working with it, and loved the way it looked. So my dilemma is whether to make another one with Dream in Colour, or to look for a substitute for the yarn in a lighter fibre.

So, two questions:
1.  Is a pure wool shrug practical for someone living in Florida half the year? (I mean, it might be... after all, a shrug is small, it's not like a sweater, right?). Or should I look for some kind of a cottony/bamboo-y/silky blend?

2. If the pure wool is really a bad idea, any suggestions for a suitable yarn sub (4.5 st/inch), that woud be less warm but still have some nice elasticity like wool does?

thanks everyone!  Grin
4  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Subscription to IK - how long before start receiving? on: June 22, 2007 07:43:59 AM
Hello knitsters!

I was given a gift subscription to Interweave knits in mid-May.  I have yet to receive an issue... is this normal?  Just curious... I'm anxious to start getting it!  Cheesy

5  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Suggestions for one skein of Handmaiden Great Big Sea Silk? on: March 18, 2007 09:55:02 AM
Hello lovely knitsters!  Smiley

I was given a gorgeous skein of Handmaiden Great Big Sea Silk for Christmas. It is a cousin to the Handmaiden sea silk but heavier weight (20 st over 4" on 4.5mm needle), and is 50% silk, 30% wool, 20% seacell (250m in one skein).  I don't know the name of the colourway but it is purples/greens/blues.

I don't have a pic, but here is a link to the handmaiden yarn page: if you scroll to the right a skein of the GBSS will appear.

I'd love some suggestions on what to do with it, that would do it justice. I'm thinking something lace-y & scarfy, but beyond that, not sure what to do.  Any ideas?

Thanks so much!   Smiley
6  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / Suggestions for a Marathoners Shrine? on: February 05, 2007 02:10:39 PM
Hope I am posting in the right spot...

My brother's bday is coming up and he says he has a Marathon Curse. Whenever he runs one, storms move into the region, thieves raid his hotel room, or his legs seize up. I thought it would be fun to make him a shrine to bring him good luck (as he has a marathon coming up in the spring). He's not crafty but has a dry, ironic sense of humour so I think he would get a kick out of it.

However, I have never made a shrine before.... so I would really welcome any creative ideas/suggestions as to what to do.  I will have to mail it, so something smaller/lighter is good. I do have quite a few Altoid-y tins kicking around, so I could always do something with one of those.

Anyway... if anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them. Thanks so much!  Smiley

"And the Grinch, with his grinch-feet ice-cold in the snow,
Stood puzzling and puzzling: "How could it be so?
It came without ribbons! It came without tags!
'It came without packages, boxes or bags!"
And he puzzled three hours, `till his puzzler was sore.
Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before!
"Maybe Christmas," he thought, "doesn't come from a store.
"Maybe Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more!"

Please wrap the present for your partner so that s/he can unwrap it on Christmas if so desired!
Items are small as crafting period will be short. However, please still take the time to do research on, and communicate with, your partner.

9  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / "Spirit of Christmas" swap? on: November 11, 2006 11:33:40 AM
I know there have already been several christmas/holiday themed swaps but I missed them. I was trying to think of a new holiday swap theme, and came up with the idea of a "Spirit of Christmas/Holidays" swap where partners would make several things for each other:

1.  a present for your partner
2.  a christmas ornament/decoration for your partner (tree ornament, xmas stocking, whatever)
3.  a present for your partner to give to someone else
4.  something your partner could use for a "random act of kindness".

Partners could make one big thing and three little things (or maybe, 1 large, 2 small, 1 small store-bought?). So, say for example I love to knit and need a tote bag, and I knit for charity, and I have a xmas tree, and a niece who loves the smurfs (are kids still into smurfs??), then my partner could make for me:

1. Present for me: Knitting tote bag (large item)
2. Decoration: tree ornament (small item)
3. Gift for someone else:  Smurf charm for my neice (small item)
4. Random act of kindness item:  fleece  baby hat for me to give to my charity (small item), or say a bag of christmas candy for me to take to work to share with my co-workers.

Interest? Suggestions? Ideas? Smiley
