2  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Re: last minute gift for half-brother and cousin? on: December 23, 2006 07:31:58 PM
maybe for the half-bro... since he's into poli sci...  do something politics related. by this i mean, depending on whether he's conservative or liberal or anything else...  make him a tshirt, or sew him something w/ a clever political slogan on it.

for example, i was stumped on what to do for my dad but then i remembered what a super ultra right wing conservative he is and i'm going to paint on a mug " Liberalism is a mental disorder. " this can obvi be switched around to " Conservatism is a mental disorder. " or what have you..   i would have stenciled this on a tshirt/baseball cap but my dad wears neither ;(

hope this helps!
3  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / ideas on how to "gift" a magazine subscription on: December 23, 2006 05:22:56 PM
for xmas i got my sister a 1-year-subscription to nylon magazine.

i want a cool and creative way to "gift" that so that she'll still have something to open on xmas morning!

i was thinking of mod-podging an old nylon mag cover to a piece of cardboard and wrapping that in a box... but i dunno....  i want something more exciting.....

4  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / Re: * Edward Gorey * themed Box -- image heavy -- on: December 08, 2006 11:38:33 AM
I adore both you and this project. I am so obsessed with Gorey and this box is so well done and beautiful! Now I need to make one! Grin Oooo, or maybe a big box for all of my Gorey books...

awww yay! a box for the gorey books is a good idea!! or maybe a bookshelf decoupaged with pages out of a gorey book (photocopied, duh!! i wasnt suggesting to tear apart a book!)..

now i just need to think of something for my bf for christmas! i wanted to try and make a plush of one of the gorey characters, but...  i'm pretty inexperienced as far as that stuff goes.

How spooky!!!

I think it rocks as is....The only suggestion I'd have is to  make the inside match the outside, colour wise.

((And his name is Andrew? Ha! How perfect!!))

inside match the outside?? you mean paint it black?? that might be cool...   his name is andrew but in the gashleygrumb tinies i think gorey uses "amy" -- i just typed it out to say his name in a font similiar to gorey's  Wink

My boyfriend's birthday is on sunday and he super loves edward gorey (he even has a couple edward gorey tattoos).

I decided to put all of his presents into a box in order to wrap them.. then thought that I could do better than just any old box... an Edward Gorey box !!

It was really easy and fun to make...  although i do admit that the black paint could look a little more professional.. but when the lid is closed, you can't see it.

(lid has a pic from the hapless child - his fave gorey story.)

(i thought this would be a fun suprise when he opened the box.. his name is andrew.)

Please let me know what you think, and if I could add anything to make it better or more gorey-esque!! thanks !!
7  COOKING / Vegetarian / Vegan / Vegan/Vegetarian resources and information on: November 19, 2006 09:48:42 AM
my cooking methods don't focus too much on "new and exciting" foods like the ethnic foods and etc..  but more on "veganize-ing" omni-favorites..  like..   dairy-free mac and cheese, soy-meat lasagna, vegan corndogs..    however, im not sure this is the right route to take with your bf because he will be mentally comparing every taste-sensation to meat..  haha. BUT, my bf went vegan a couple months ago and he super loves it so far.......   one super good cookbook author lady to definitely look up is Bryanna Grogan..

check out her free recipe archives here. http://www.bryannaclarkgrogan.com/page/page/661699.htm

she's prettymuch amazing. ALSOOOO, if you go to http://www.vegsource.com/talk/recipes/index.html  you can ask "Chef Deb" about how to make ANYTHING..   like.. say you super want to make a vegetarian meatloaf but don't have a recipe or don't know of a good one, just post in the msg board asking for one from her and she'll apply within a couple of hours with one. It's really good for those times when you want to try and make something challenging and seemingly impossible like "vegan grilled cheese" and she's NEVER stumped!!

well, i shared with you most of my secrets...  i really want your bf to be successful w/ this transition!! hope this helps !!

ps. was the movie good?? i cant wait to see it.
8  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Re: The Thanksgiving Turkey (and other goodies!) Thread on: November 19, 2006 09:40:37 AM
Now & Zen makes an UnTurkey which can be found at Whole Foods but if you didn't like tofurky, then that might not be for you...  it's prettymuch the same thing except the stuffing is better and it has "skin" made out of tofu..........

another option is Celebration hand stuffed Field Roast from Whole Foods...  you might have a hard time finding it so, ask the deli people and they'll point it out to you. This is prettymuch my favorite...    you can find out more and where they sell it near you at www.vegangrainmeat.com (i think... or do a google search for "celebration roast")

hope this helps !!
9  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Re: Boyfriend & Sister XMAS Present - cheeaaap (and hip!) on: November 14, 2006 03:44:57 PM
those are all really clever ideas but im not sure about them...

i can probably do a stenciled tee for them, but i dont know what i'd stencil on..

the journal idea is good, because he's definately the mushy type -- but im not sure if i'm mushy enough to fill it with mush !!

my sis has like no wall room to put a huge rasterbated pic

the mrs federline, other hilton sister tshirts are funny but i don't think she'd wear them

and i like the lightbox idea but i don't think it would really get any use, and the portfolio idea is cute but she already has one, and i think it's supposed to be super professional looking anyway

any other ideas would be appreciated!
10  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Boyfriend & Sister XMAS Present - cheeaaap (and hip!) on: November 11, 2006 02:11:58 PM
OK so, I know this might be a tad early.. but I really want to get a head start on this Xmas stuff. I want to craft a good portion of my presents this year because this morning my boyfriend and I decided to not really spend too much on XMAS in favor of saving money to move out... again (we're staying with my parents! you think you've got it rough?!) (jk. ha).

ANYWAY -- the two I'm concerned about right now.. because they are the two favorite people in my life...  are the boyfriend and the sister.

Here is some info about them....

BF -- DOUBLE THREAT - December Birthday AND Xmas! - Age: 22.
 - we used to be in an indie band together.. he plays guitar/bass/drums/synth and can sing..
 - he LOVES the artist Edward Gorey (and has a couple of Gorey's works as tattoos on his arm). his favorite author is roald dahl.
 - His favorite bands are Modest Mouse and Q and Not U (typically that genre of music). also, i'm sure he wouldn't pass up a threesome with ben gibbard of death cab and andrew kenny of american analog set if he had the chance.
 - He has aspirations of attending either CalArts or SFSU to go into animation/film/directing/etc. he also has a lot of favorite directors and movies and actors, but i can only name off maybe 3 of them.
 - he's one kick ass writer, and in the past has kept long-term journals and was into writing poetry, song lyrics... although not so much anymore
 - he works at ritz camera, so he doenst really "need" anything having to do with photo stuff...
 - he's been vegetarian for a couple of years and recently went vegan in May, so he still gets a thrill out of the "friends don't let friends drink milk" stuff.
 - he's hetero but has some undying love for anything Sanrio (esp. batz maru and chococat) and Paul Frank
 - we go to Disneyland together prettymuch once a week (i'm not exaggerating.. we go like every tuesday)
 - he loves fart and poop jokes. his other humor includes seinfeld re-runs, aqua teen, and wondershowzen
 - he likes tea and flavored coffee.
 - past presents i've made for him include: an ipod cozy (which he still uses, almost 1 yr later!), and I made him a journal.. but he hasn't really touched it. (again, 1 year later...)
 - oh, and he's originally from Boston (grew up there) but we just moved to California over the summer -... so maybe an idea to make him less homesick? (i think that he secretly misses the hipsters that hang at  Grasshopper restaurant)

ok, now for the other one....

SISTER - age: 21
 - loooooooves that band The Like. I don't know why, she idolizes the lead singer, Z.
 - and, loves basically any band that a) starts with the word "The" and b) is from England (or near there).
 - other musical interests involve dance-y stuff and music that doesnt make sense like Delta 5, Bush Tetras, A Certain Ratio..
 - she listens to East Village radio on the net.. DJ Elham, DJ Leigh Lezark (The Misshapes)
 - she goes to an art school for advertising
 - she loves british fashion & alternative magazines (i-D, Amelia's Magazine, Nylon)
 - she digs crossword puzzles, make-up, colorful things
 - her fave photographer is david lachapelle, but also enjoys herb ritz
 - she likes wearing rosaries (im guessing she thinks their cool and fashionable............ right)
 - she's basically a big fan of the LA and NY music scenes, even though we don't live in either city........
 - she also works at starbucks.
 - she doesn't own an ipod, but wants one -- however, i think an ipod cozy is not applicable
 - she was probably the only one anticipating the release of both Kevin Federline's and Paris Hilton's albums.
 - past presents ive made for her are a personalized decorated coffee tumbler and a cute, hip handbag

alright.. so looking back... i basically made my BF sound like an art-fag and my sister sound like a hipster snob (actually, I think she's a closet snob.... AKA, she's nice to your face) and... that sounds about right! so.. any ideas to wow these kids would be AWESOME because I love them so much !!

thank you !!!!

OH!!! I forgot to mention... my sewing machine is broken right now (the needle snapped in half while moving it cross country! does anyone know how much this is to fix?)..  so any sewing projects would need to be hand-sewn
