SCIENCE

Anything goes as long as it's science themed! Can be a person, place or thing! Maybe a cosmological constant or a theory or a fictional world where science has gone awry.

This is a monthly swap, but you do NOT have to join in each month's round! Feel free to only join in for themes you love, or to pass on months when you have no spare time.

Read more about the original idea here.

What is a dotee? (by Smmarrt)

A dotee is a mini art doll, meant to be traded or swapped. The dolls are generally smaller than 6" with a face, but do not usually have arms or legs (unless that's part of your design). Dotees have a loop for hanging, some come with tails (tails are fibers, ribbon, charms or other string-y things that add to the theme of the doll), and can be made from a variety of materials - fabric, felt, canvas, denim, gourds or any other material/media that you can make a doll from. Most dotee makers add buttons, beads, sequins, embroidery, or charms to embellish the doll.

Check out the galleries from previous dotee swaps to get some ideas:

4  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General / Fun paper techniques on: December 16, 2017 07:25:51 PM
Fun stuff to do if you need something to do (fun with kids too!)

Cirtrasolv and old National Georgraphics - this is the only one that needs a longer time to dry

Pour a small amount of Citrasolv (or cheaper alternative orange oil cleaner) into a cup and either brush onto pages or add to a spray bottle and spray onto pages. TIP: Rip pages before spraying/painting pages! This makes them easier to remove. Keep pages in the magazine and close. After an hour or so, you can remove pages and hang to dry. Your house/bathroom/garage will smell orange-y for daysssssss. There is some debate over which era Nat Geos to use - due to the ink and printing process. I think you can use anything earlier than 1980.

DENDRITIC PRINTS

You need two pieces of plexiglass and acrylic paints. Squirt dots of paint onto one piece of plexiglass, layer other piece on top and squash. Watch the paints mingle and make shapes. You may need a butter knife or other flat blade to separate the two pieces of plexiglass - once air is introduced, it will make fissures and vein-y lines. You get two prints at once. Sometimes you can get ghosts prints as well.

BUBBLE PRINTS

Water in a yogurt cup or similar, dish soap - about 4-8 drops, liquid water color (acrylic paints/craft paints work, too) and a straw. Mix paint into water-soap mixture and blow with the straw. Have a piece of paper ready to smash into bubbles.
REMEMBER to BREATHE in or you will cause a terrible headache. Take breaks and add more layers.

STRING PULL PRINTS

Fold your paper in half and dip string or yarn in a cup of paint (or craft paint + water). Place string on one side of paper, fold over other half, hold firmly with one hand while you pull string with other hand. With kids, you might want to tie a loop at one end of string so they can grab hold.

FISH PRINT - GYOTAKU

I have some rubber fish at the preschool but you can do this with a real fish. Smelly but fun.
Dab acrylic paint onto fish with a sponge and when you print, you crinkle and rub the paper over the uneven surface. Don't worry about wrinkling the paper - it all works out in the end.

(copied from SonjaBoo with her permission)

Many mixed-media artists out there have fun with Happy Mail swaps so lets bring another one to Craftster! For this swap, youll beautifully decorate an envelope (something around a 6x9ish) in the way of your choice paint it, mix media it up, add fabric, whatever inspires you. (Remember, whatever you do, you need to leave white spots or labels for your addresses!) Then, youll include FIVE small but handmade (or hand altered) embellishments or crafting doo-dads for your partner to enjoy.

This is a low-pressure swap, with the only requirement being that you must send along five hand-made or hand-altered goodies, rather than store-bought. (Let's keep this inexpensive!)

What are crafting doo-dads, you ask? Here are some ideas!
Handmade stickers, cards, altered tags, crafty ephemera, glue stencils, inchies, altered paperclips, ATCs, hand-cut stencils, paper feathers, paper flowers, altered buttons, etc. (And many other ideas not even mentioned here! Use your imagination, as long as someone can craft with it and you made it.)

8  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / More Junk Journals made from Nancy Drew books on: July 24, 2017 03:49:17 PM
The first in a series of 5 or 6 junk journals I'm making and giving away (some are surprises and some are requests) using Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books. I do collect these but I like the non-shiny covers - 1965 I think? Anyway, these were free or about to be recycled so I rescued them.

For a friend, Jana, who is going through some stuff....

The inside is covered in fabric after I reinforced the spine with sticky-back canvas.

And the pages are the usual - security envelopes, scrapbook scraps, card stock, vintage book pages, et cetera.

9  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Flow-ish Journal on: July 24, 2017 03:45:01 PM
Another journal, another post and as always, starring my left pointer finger. Seriously, can a sister get a binder clip?

This is a Flow-ish journal - inspired by Flow magazine. It is a Dutch magazine (printed in English, too!) that is crafty, house-y, and life-style-y. They also print a Flow for Paper Lovers - a thick book with all kinds of goodies that you are encouraged to rip out and use in your own projects. This has inspired folks to make these for their crafty friends so here is the first one I have made.

The cover should be a repurposed item - I used a a cookie box. I painted the plain side of the box and kept the printed side as is.

The pages are not bound in - I used file bands - aka giant rubber bands. You fill it with everything we use in the junk journals - all kinds of paper. The receiver can pull out stuff to use. Similar to the paper destash swaps - this is just a different delivery system.

Swap name:Junker Jane-syle Dolls - July 2017
Craftster member who is organizing this swap: Smmarrt
Sign-up date range: 07/06/17 - 07/16/17
Date to send item by: 08/16/17

If so, which country?

Additional Age requirement? Craftster rules

- Has successfully completed two swaps as a participant: YES
- Is not organizing more than three swaps right now: YES
- Will recruit a co-organizer or give all details to a Swap Moderator if this swap has more than 25 participants: YES
- Is at least 18 years old: YES

Swap Organizer will check each participant to make sure they meet these conditions:

- Participant has agreed that he/she is at least 16 years old: YES
- If within the US, understands that Delivery Confirmation number is required for this swap: YES
- If outside the US, understands that a mailing receipt copy is required for this swap: YES

Details of swap: This is the fourth (I think) Junker Jane-style doll swap. Who is Junker Jane? She is a Portland-based artist - more info here:
http://junkerjane.com

You make a doll based on your partner's preferences - the fun thing about these dolls is that the wide range of fabrics and embellishments you can use. In past swaps, swappers made cats, snakes, an octopus and other creatures and critters with many types of fabric and lace, stain, painting and found objects. Some folks prefer the grungy look while others have used bright and colorful fabrics. It is artist's choice ultimately but there is so much freedom to making these dolls.

Not a doll maker? That's okay, too. The limbs are often attached externally and the sewing can be sketchy and uneven, which adds to the charm of these creations.

For international partners (if we have some) - It is okay to send doll UNSTUFFED to save on postage. I know that postal rates in the US are high so this will help with postage.
