This is great! Did you use a pattern?

Wow, you guys make this sound so easy! How long did it take you guys to make your first pattern? Even after you've made a few patterns and gotten the feel of things, does it still usually take a very long time to make an amigurumi pattern?
3  CROCHET / Amigurumi: Discussion and Questions / Delving in the world of ambigurumi on: July 23, 2012 10:57:40 AM
Hi, everyone. I'm new to crocheting, and have been doing very simple projects so I can learn how to read patterns. Now I would like to make a simple amigurumi, like an egg or onigiri -- something that requires only 1 or 2 colors, so I can get the feel of things. I was using a size g/h hook to do the simple granny square and magic ring projects when I was learning to read patterns, but I had recently acquired a size 3 hook (Hamanaka Raku-Raku), which, after some research, I saw was the size that most amigurumi were crafted with. This is what I have (the Strawberry Pink one): http://img1.etsystatic.com/il_fullxfull.258721117.jpg

I'm wondering if I am able to still make some of the simple amigurumi I've seen here on the forums, even though some call for a larger hook? Does anyone have any suggestions on places that offer free patterns that are specifically made for a size 3 hook like this?

I am also wondering about the type of yarn I will need for a hook like this. It was suggested to me by a friend that I use DMC or Aunt Lydia's brand yarn for a size 3 hook. Is that okay? Is there some other brand I can use in case the store doesn't have those brands?

Thank you very much!
