1181  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Books of magic and life and potions on: February 12, 2015 02:14:43 PM
I made these little books and potions for the Curiosity Cabinet Swap, then made other items to send.

The books are about 2 inches tall with embossed leather covers. The embossing is a bit faint, but then these are well used and very old. The pages are distressed paper bags (I'm sure the ancients used these too). Wrinkled, dyed with tea and ironed.

The bottles are varied. Some came from the dollar store full of little glittery things to add to your finger nail polish I guess. Cute bottles though. And I found the brown one at the local doll house supply store. A few beads on top, some mysterious contents and be careful what you drink.

1182  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Ancient druid crow mask on: February 12, 2015 01:59:37 PM
Crows and ravens were sacred to the druids and the Celtics. This is a prototype, only about 2 inches wide. I wanted to make a larger one for the Curiosity Cabinet swap, but got waylaid by other ideas. I may still do a larger version when I can figure out a better armature and product to use. I used a home made paper clay that was a bit hard to work with. I'll have to adjust the recipe or buy the stuff.

The mask is finished with brown wax, which did not stick, but made the cracks look good and black shoe polish.

I'm still Wembling around between two possible ways to go. I can't start until my last prayer flag is done (just three to go) so I'll just keep Wembling (remember Fraggle Rock?)
1184  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Re: Begging machines or toys with arms! on: February 12, 2015 01:23:02 PM
The top of the big one is a wooden top turned upside down and stuck in the top of the block. I had fun with drills and teeny little nails, metal can bits and lots of paint layers put on and wiped off. And I've about used up my one pad of distress ink.

I laid out a plastic sheet and dumped all my wood bits, old metal bits, odds and ends out to paw through. My DW found several cool items to use to build a cigar box diddly-bow and strum sticks. A cigar box guitar is next. Now I've sorted everything and stashed it away again just so we can walk around the room.

P.S. I added this above, but the first one has a 2.5 inch block and min is a 1.5 inch block, I have a smaller shelf to work with. Quite a bit difference in scale.
1185  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / The Swap Gallery / Re: Curiosity Cabinet Gallery on: February 12, 2015 01:17:21 PM
I am astonished at the variety of items here. Wow. I have even more ideas.

I love the little bird nest spoon and I've been waiting to see the test tubes show up after all the discussion. Cute use. And Alice's rabbit hole house. Very charming.

I made some little bottles, then went in another direction, so they are sitting with my other rejects on my shelf.

Can't wait for the next one. I think I am missing the swap anxiety this one gave me.

I just rip a piece of fabric to 11 x 5, iron over the three inches at the top and stitch across. What are hems and finished seams....seems to me I've heard of those before....somewhere.

I like the torn edges of fabric and anyone who received one of mine will get proof of that. I have some flags that are really mini quilts, very finished and very beautiful and not done by me. Cheesy I do love the variety we get.
1187  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Manus Volatilis or the elusive "Hand Butterfly" on: February 12, 2015 12:04:09 PM
Rare and unusual items are showing up in the Curiosity Cabinet Swap Gallery...check it out.

Here are two specimens of the rare and scary Manus Volatilis or "Hand Butterfly"

This first item, flown off now to my partner sports gossamer wings and shiny eyes, with a tail of precious beads.

The second specimen, mine, has turquoise eyes and umbrella wings in metallic splendor.

1188  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Begging machines or toys with arms! on: February 12, 2015 11:54:11 AM
The Curiosity Cabinet swap has been a blast. Check it out in the swap gallery. I made a number of things for the swap and then for me.

A while ago I acquired doll arms...lots of doll arms and have been trying to use some in swaps. So meet the

Begging Machines. They were designed by the infamous "Armless Monk", no monk, but he wore monks robs for ease and for enhancing his begging. And since he had no arms, he invented the "begging machine" to get that last coin in hand.

Here is the original version, sent away in a swap. The base is a 2.5 inch block.

The embossed metal panels are former soda cans, hand embossed with a variety of tools and distressed with paint and sand paper. The other items were all out of my stash...all of it!

And now my smaller version for me. The base for this is a 1.5 inch block, quite a bit smaller.

and trundling off to go to work.......

LOL, I'm sure the size will be fine. It adds variety, I've gotten all kinds of little variations on sizes on these. Sometimes they just turn out a bit different in size. They sound wonderful and colorful. I had to redo one because the colors I used (my fav's) were all on her "don't like" list. I redid it in brighter colors and it looks wonderful! And I get another flag for me.

OH NO. Better check my prayer flags at home. Maybe they disappeared too!!!! Flew off in a  high wind.  Grin Grin

Hope it gets fixed soon.
