1  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Discussion and Questions / Is my iron dead? on: July 09, 2007 06:32:57 PM
I was happily ironing some fabric, my iron was puffing out great gusts of "steam" and all was well. Then, *drip drip drip* the iron made a tiny splootch. Now, I've had that happen when I tried to to use lots of steam and the iron wasn't hot yet.

But this time, when I set it back down, it outright puddled, and mostly out of the lower left steam hole.

So the real question is: is my iron dead? Is there a fix for this? Just use it without water? Or are we in "insides go melty, and sparks are next" territory?
2  CLOTHING / Sewing Pattern Reviews / mccall's pattern 3979 View A- Smock Pocket Apron on: September 17, 2006 09:20:05 PM
I'm looking for anyone that's made View A from 3979, it's the half apron with the adorable contrasting waistband and pocket. -I'm working on it now, with the only modifications being adding the curvy bottom and an extra pocket from View B.

I'm still not positive about one thing: does the waistband actually fold over when worn (if you didn't, you'd have this weird, high, pointy-up waistband? Because that is obviously NOT how I waist the waistband to lay! ) Or am I reading everything completely wrong?

I thought, from the main picture, that the gathered fabric was sewn directly to the pointy (bottom, I thought) of the waistband. But the drawing and directions clearly shows the point facing up (it's self-faced, so the folding-down makes sense, but in terms of utility, and looking good, I just don't get it.

Oh- and the ties are not self faced, so I don't get how you can fold down the smock but have the ties not show their wrong sides!  Huh

If anyone could please help un-befuddle me, it would be greatly appreciated!
3  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / Cupcake Painting (No peeking Sonjaboo !!) on: April 21, 2006 02:19:17 PM
I'm participating in the cupcake swap, and I was inspired by the fun colors and textures of icing and cake and the prefered colors of my swap partner (Sonjaboo) to come up with this little acrylic and glitter painting. The entire canvas is 9x12, but the cupcake is roughly life-sized.

4  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing Machines: Discussion and Questions / viking husqvarna 500 *bobbin winding* question - I really need help! on: April 14, 2006 07:49:16 PM
Ok, I inherited my mom's viking husqvarna 500 computer (lucky girl, right?) but the manual has gotten separated from the machine. And now I have to wind a bobbin. And the dang nabbed bobbins won't fit onto the winder!

Does anyone have a clue what could be happening here? I even went out and bought new bobbins, on the off chance that she'd accidentally sent along the wrong ones. But the new ones don't fit onto the pokey thing either. The hole in the middle of the bobbin is just. too. small.

My hand stitching stinks. This machine is my only hope!

In the meantime, I guess I'll have to figure out how to get some good tension on winding bobbins by hand...

edit to add: in the meantime, my sweetie has rigged up a *drill* (!!!) to wind bobbins!
5  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Free yarn to a good home on: March 31, 2006 10:56:12 AM
I attempted to give this away on my local (LA) SnB group, but the message never made it through, so I'll try here!

I cleaned out my stash, and I have a few balls to give away, I'd prefer to just send them all at once to one person, I'll take care of shipping, within the continental 48.

TLC Amore:

2 skeins Persimmon
4 skeins Plum

Caron Cuddle Soft

5 skeins Baby Green
5 skeins Baby Yellow
(one additional skein of each that was started and has been wound back), so 6 total of each).

7  California / California: South / drawing classes in LA? on: January 04, 2006 05:18:16 PM
I'm looking to take a drawing class (ideally this spring) in LA. I live on the west side, but I'm willing to drive a bit for a good instructor. Oh, and I haven't drawn worth a durn since college (6 years ago).

Any recommendations?
8  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General / Decoupaged box on: December 22, 2005 12:35:25 PM
Not sure if this is quite the right section, but it's a paper box, with a decoupaged design, so...

I picked up one of those little boxes from Michaels on Monday, not knowing exactly what I would do with it, but knowing that my best friend needed a Christmas gift, and that I'd be seeing him this evening! I already had the image torn out from a magazine, and the elephant stamp is a woodcut I bought at an art gallery in Dublin. I hope he likes!
