11  EUROPE / GERMANY / Craft stores in Berlin? on: October 13, 2010 11:55:11 AM
Hi everyone!

I'm new to Berlin (new to Germany, in fact) and was hoping someone could recommend some craft stores for me- I've had a look at the other threads but (and I will sound silly) people mostly seem to be looking for something special, whereas I'm mostly hoping to find a run-of-the-mill chain store where I can buy knitting needles and other basic supplies. The stores here are basically -all- different to the ones in Australia, so I really don't even know where to begin.

Any advice will be appreciated!

Thanks everyone  Cheesy

12  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Re: Roasted Vegetable Soup on: June 20, 2010 03:52:22 PM
I could probably eat soup every day of the week, and since it's winter here, this recipe is perfectly timed! Thanks!

The thing about this soup is you can make it in the summer/fall when all the veggies are fresh, then freeze it and have it when it's cold out in the winter and get all your good vitamins. =)

Hehe, I guess it would have been clearer if I'd said "Thanks for the inspiration!" Obviously I won't be making your soup for a little while (unfortunately, it could be a very long while, because when the weather starts to warm up here in Aus, I'll be packing up and moving to Germany for another winter, and then back to Australia for my fifth winter in a row!), I will definitely be making some yummy roasted vege soup this week- I went to my local farmers market this weekend and picked out some lovely seasonal veges and I'm good to go! I just thought I would tell you that I became so obsessed with the idea of making my own yoghurt after seeing all your pictures that I bought a yoghurt maker last week! It was only AUD20 so I'll probably make the money back in about a week, very excited about it! Thanks for the inspiration  Grin

Please be sure you tie this loosely around your child's wrist--because remember, if it's too tight it can cut off the blood circulation and your child could loose their hand!  And that would be bad, my friends.  Very bad, indeed.

...although it would solve the thumb-sucking problem... :p

What a cute solution and I bet it saved you a small fortune. Well done!

Nice job! I love Brennan and her necklaces, too- now planning to do some Bones-inspired stash-busting when I go home for my mid-year break. Thanks for the inspiration!
20  COOKING / Vegetarian / Vegan / Tasty dinners: Beetroot tart and 'Mexican' pasta. on: May 26, 2010 02:59:23 AM
Hi everyone! I'm going to treat this as a first post, as although I did post once when I originally joined Craftster (six years ago!), due to an excess of crazy in my life at that time, I had to abandon the site (and basically the internet in general) for quite some time.
Ahem. So, my name is Lauren. And now we move on...

So, after eating out a lot this weekend (so many restaurants, so little time!) this week I have felt the strain on both my budget and my waistline, and decided to use up some of the food in my pantry and refrigerator instead of going grocery shopping.

First dinner I made was a beetroot tart, which became a free-form tart after I realised I don't own a pie dish (I am a university student and keep most of my cooking supplies in boxes under my dorm-room bed, so this shouldn't have been a surprise to me). It came out of the oven looking very pretty, but I felt that it was missing something flavour-wise.

I made it with puff-pastry, layers of roasted pumpkin, sweet potato and beetroot, and an egg/fetta mix. Any suggestions to improve this one would be appreciated- I still have plenty of beets and I'm sure that there must be something I can do with them other than preserving them in vinegar!

Second dinner (tonight's option) was a Mexican-chili-style pasta with canned tomatoes, kidney beans, Sanitarium casserole mince (which is basically TVP with a gravy of sorts- looks sort of like cat food but cooks up very nicely), some fresh corn and grated carrot, a package of salsa, some powdered chili and a bunch of random herbs. Yummy comfort food!

xx Lauren.
