1551  IMAGE REPRODUCTION TECHNIQUES / Screen Printing: Discussion and Questions / Re: Is this a good deal for a silkscreen kit? on: May 25, 2005 02:26:13 PM
I got the speedball kit as well. It is a really good starter kit. Once you've used it for a while you may find you want a better (finer) screen or to apply different approaches but it does have everything you need to get you started.

Mine only cost $25 Canadian in Toronto, so you may be able to find a better deal than $55! Admittedly, that was a few years ago, but I don't see why the price should have more than doubled.

Good luck! Smiley
1552  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Re: Handmade fabric swap on: May 16, 2005 01:31:23 PM
I think this is a really cool idea. I'm a newbie but really keen to participate in a swap. People have posted really fabulous things they've made and I think it would be a real inspiration for creativity to see how someone else interprets this (or almost any) swap idea.

I think that it might be cool to be less restrictive (i.e. not limit this to modified white muslin, but anything the swap partner might like). I'm way into colour. I like to screen print fabric and lately I've been making lino prints on fabric too.

I also like the modified iterative swap ( A alters fabric -> B re-alters -> C). And depending on what C receives s/he might want to further modify it too!

I'd participate if you organize it. Maybe you just have to wait until enough craftsters notice your cool idea.  Wink
1553  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General / Re: Fabric covered journals -- completed! on: April 28, 2005 06:05:40 PM
Wow! Those are some seriously gorgeous books.

And now I have to plan another trip to the mainland to check out Daiso! Wish I'd read this thread before going to Vancouver last week.

I put in another vote for a tutorial please.  Cheesy
1554  REUSING/RECYCLING/RECRAFTING / What the heck can I do with THIS? / Re: old batteries on: April 27, 2005 05:48:30 PM

What you can or should do with lead acid (not Ni-Cad rechargeable) batteries probably depends on where you live. Because they can leak and do contain acid and can even explode under certain conditions, they are toxic waste and shouldn't be put it with the regular trash (battery acid in land fills... how awful!  Angry ). The good news is that even "non-rechargeable" batteries can now be recycled. Check with you local city hall (or equivalent) to see whether they will recycle them or have special requirements.

1555  CANADA / British Columbia / Re: Vancouver Island craft fairs? Resources on: April 26, 2005 05:36:15 PM

I moved to North Saanich (north of Victoria) a couple of years ago and have been keeping my eyes peeled. I'm afraid I don't know of anything on-line. But there are all sorts of craft fairs around here. In Sidney in the summer time they have a weekly market. They shut down the main drag (it's a very small town) and people set up stalls to sell their wares and there are always great crafts/handmade items. They seem to have a craft fair ever season at the Mary Winspear centre, also in Sidney. There are lots of opportunities in Victoria in the summer time (i.e. Bastion Square and Chinatown markets) for selling handmade items.

The art supply store Opus in Victoria has a newsletter which lists a lot of arts (but not necessarily crafts) related events and opportunities.

Maybe a motivated crafter should set  up a website?  Wink
