1  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / Knee high woollen socks on: February 24, 2012 11:47:14 AM
During the darkest time of last year, right around Chistmas, I managed to finish knitting a pair of knee-high woollen socks. I hadn't really knitted any socks after the ones we did at school, when I was about 12 years old, but since I knew the basic techniques, it wasn't that hard of a project.

The pattern I used is based on a pair of similar knee-high socks, which were knitted by my great grandmother. Since they are almost a few decades old by now and very worn out, I figured I should make something to replace them and even though I must admit, the quality of my knitting is still far behind that of my great grandmother's, I am quite happy with how these turned out. Also, they proved to be of great value, when in January I had to suffer the outside temperatures of -30C.

2  FIBER ARTS / Weaving: Completed Projects / Card woven belts on: February 22, 2012 10:47:40 AM
A few summers back I attended a historical reenactment event and during the days I spent there, the viking-age enthusiasts managed to teach me card weaving and make me fall in love with it. After that I have every now and given it a go and as a result have managed to complete a few rather colourful belts with various different patterns.

I've yet to come up with a good way to wear them though, as I always manage to make them far too long for everyday uses. So until now I've only been able to wear them during folk events and the few reenactment festivals I happen to visit, but I am thinking of making a bag in the near future and using one of these as a strap.

3  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / Northern summer on canvas on: February 21, 2012 03:57:51 AM
Yes, sometimes I paint. These particular landscape views are about a year old, both of places that mean a lot to me. The first being a view of Pangodi lake and the second one of a field next to river Emajgi, both situated in Southern Estonia.

There is something about the light, the colours and the feeling of summertime here, up in the far Northeastern Europe. Summer is something we wait for the entire year and then suddenly it is here, all it's warmth and it's endless days, when the sun sets only for a few short hours. Everything smells sweet and is filled with sounds of life and happiness and yet, all this is so different from what you can experience in warmer climates. The colours are bright, but have this greenish cool hue to them, the sounds are loud, but at the same time a bit timid and shy, the sun is bright, but it is not the overbearing light of the south, but the friendly and welcomed warmth of the north.

I love the northern summers. And I hope I have managed to capture at least the slightest glimpse of it on canvas.

Both of the paintings are made on canvas with acrylic paint.
4  NEWS AND DISCUSSION ABOUT CRAFTSTER / Introduce Yourself / Hello from Estonia on: February 20, 2012 11:27:05 AM
Hello everybody!

I am Minea, 20 years old and from the tiny country up in the far Northeastern Europe. Since our rather northern and cold climate dictates that at least half of the year the outside world is very nearly uninhabitable, I have always enjoyed curling up in my room with a nice cup of tea and taking up yet another artsy-craftsy project. Over the years I have tried very many different things from sewing and embroidering to knitting and woodwork, but recently I discovered the wonderful substance called polymer clay. Ever since I have been sculpting everything from little carrots to art-dolls and immensely enjoying the process.

In any case, nice to meet you all! I hope to have a great time here. Smiley
