1  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: This for That Swap (Signup: 3/24 - 4/9, Send-out: 5/11) on: April 22, 2012 01:02:34 PM
I got my package from AlphaBrett today (well, yesterday, but I was out). All I can say is nyah nyah nyah i got the bestest package! I'll post pics tomorrow (I don't know if the pics go here or if there's a gallery thread?)
OK, first let me say that AlphaBrett didn't even mention she makes jewelry, so I was super surprised to get two neclaces, a bracelet, and four pairs of earrings. One is a set of beautiful purple drop earrings and a funky necklace to match. The purple beads remind me of ripe blackberries. The other necklace is red and gray, with big garnet looking stones, and little silver beads. The bracelet sort of matches the set, it is made with the same little purple beads, but the bracelet is smaller and almost more delicate. I love that the set matches, but is not identical. The three pairs of earrings are strawberries, which are made from fabric and are feather-light. All of the jewelry was tucked into a wooden box that I already have plans to decorate.
AlphaBrett also sent me six beautiful handmade mineral eyeshadows- in Van Gogh (a gunmetal grey), Peacock (a rich green), Pink Sugar (rosy pink), Safari (gold), Ghost (silver gray), and a beautiful rich purple (which didn't have a name). The name of the eyeshadow AlphaBrett makes is called 'ZomB', which I think is awesome (I love zombies, so even the name of her brand was a perfect match). I can finally chuck all the eyeshadow I've had for ten years. Plus, I mentioned my eyes were greenish-brown, and she took the time to figure out what colors compliment my eyes.
On to the bath goodies... I got two blue and cream scrubbies, a larger one for the bath and a smaller one for by the sink. They are crocheted circles of the softest yarn. I pet them like I would a cat. Plus, AlphaBrett made me a bottle of raspberry jojoba bead/ strawberry seed scrubby bath salt. Yes, it smells better than it sounds! It smells like a sorbet, and now I can't wait for berries to come in season.
I am a scrapbooker, and I got the perfect crocheted mini album to put pictures in. The cover is black and silver, and its just so wonderfully done. I started counting the number of pics it would hold, and lost count midway at about 30... now I need to get out there with my camera to fill it up LOL
I am the caffeine queen, and I finally have a real cup cozy, no more cheapo cardboard sleeves for this gal! AlphaBrett crocheted an awesome lime green cup cozy. The best part of it is, she made it adjustable so I can put it on any cup I use. She added polkadot ribbons in black and white, and pink and green, so I can tie on my cozy and adjust it. Perfect because I sometimes use a big travel mug which is pretty shabby, and now it will have a facelift.
She even thought about my cat, and included a crocheted cactus for him to play with. Ok, I'll be honest- the cat never saw me open the package, so he doesn't know what he's missing LOL. I think I may be taking this over as a keychain. It is a little chubby green cactus with a pink and blue cactus flower on the top. I have a lousy habit of forgetting to water real plants, cacti are the only things that can survive me (and with a cat, a cactus would be a bad idea LOL)
Wait, there's more! We agreed to swapping some extras. I also got a piece of Simpsons fabric, which seems to have every Simpsons character on it, even the less common ones like Herschel Krustofsky (Krusty's father) and Hank Scorpio (the best diabolical boss). The fabtic says 'Wheres Bart?', and I had fun playing 'wheres Waldo' with the material. I also got a bag of goodies- a big brick of Studio by Sculpey, in a sage green color. It reminds me of the color patina you get on terracotta flowerpots, absolutely lovely. Some really cool buttons- a dinosaur, a fairy, a watermelon, and some coffee and cupcake buttons (the fairy is my fave- she even has glittered wings). A bag of tiny, brightly colored bells! I wondered why my package jingle-jangled when I picked it up LOL. And the one extra I specifically requested was something local- she included a bottlecap from Nehi peach soda- which she said is a gas station staple. I have to make this into a piece of jewelry, because in NY, we don't have ANY peach soda, especially not one with a cute top.
This package was absolutely perfect! I'm still working on yours, AlphaBrett, but I hope you like yours as much as I love mine.

That is such a cool purple hat, even cooler that its got glittery bits to it... but the little curls of the dog's ears at the bottom of the hat... I just 'awwww'ed. Your model may have been wriggly, but it was nice to see an 'action shot' of the hat.

6  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Re: Ideas for Sister in Hospital on: April 18, 2012 12:29:59 AM
What about a card kit? you could pre-fold card bases, include envelopes, and cut out a bunch of shapes and images, some sheets of stickers, doilies, glue sticks, and include a rubber stamp or two and an ink pad. Then she wouldn't need scissors but could make and write out cards. You could do the same with bookmark kits. Markers may be allowed, or something to color with.
7  CRAFTING FOR GOOD AND NOT EVIL / Crafty Charitable/Social Causes / Re: Activities for people with dementia (and other disabilities related to aging)??? on: April 17, 2012 11:05:24 PM
two things are very important here- 1) your grandmother needs to feel like she is making good use of her time. and 2) your grandmother needs activities to keep her mind 'limber'.
There are a ton of books out there, for working with kids, and developmentally disabled adults. Please understand, I am not saying your grandmother is either BUT these are usually crafts that can be done with 'clumsy fingers' and don't take too long to complete. I really like the ideas of making greeting cards and/or a scrapbook. Coloring pages are good too. Anything to keep her mind active. I had a Gerontology professor who taught his dad (who had dementia) to play the guitar. As he put it "My pop was never gonna be Jimi Hendrix, but he did learn Mary Had A Little Lamb and Frere Jacques. Most of all, he had fun."
8  CRAFTING FOR GOOD AND NOT EVIL / Crafty Charitable/Social Causes / Re: The Blood Bag Project on: April 17, 2012 10:45:31 PM
I donate platelets rather regularly. platelets cannot be manufactured, and must come from a human, they are only good to be transfused for a short period of time. Same with most blood components- they can be seperated from human blood, but can't be 'made' in a lab. I am the biggest pain-baby, but it really doesn't hurt much. In fact, the little pinprick in my finger hurts worse than the actual donation.
I am sorry to hear that your sister has to go through so much to survive. I wish more people understood the importance of giving blood, or blood components. Really, the average person has all this extra blood they don't need, but that blood can be a priceless gift to someone who needs it.
9  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / Talk About The Swap Process / Re: If You're THAT Busy... on: April 17, 2012 05:46:39 PM
if the rules in the swap say partners must check in, communicate with each other etc. then I would expect they follow those rules. Things do happen, though, so maybe alittle leeway? Like if it says chexk in once a week, and they check in on Tues and then again the next Wed, yes, it has been 8 days, but it still seems like once a week.
10  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / Talk About The Swap Process / Re: Knitting and Point Swaps on: April 17, 2012 05:43:14 PM
i think it depends on WHO you craft for. I do not knit, crochet, sew or anything involving a needle LOL. So, to ME, personally, a hat would be at least a medium, probably a large. A crafter who knits might have different expectations based on how long it would take them to make X, but I'm totally ignorant to time and figure it must take forever to make it.
