1  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Gift for a friend's Cotillion on: March 15, 2006 10:31:45 PM
A friend of mine is having her 18th birthday party on Saturday... it's her Cotillion, the huge, elaborate celebration that Filipino girls have when they become 18.. similar to a quincenera.

I've known her since we were little but have never known what to get her for occasions like these.. her parents are wealthy and she has mostly everything she needs or wants.  But I still want to give her something nice.  Any ideas for something handmade?

2  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Dying store-bought dress? on: March 12, 2006 07:45:10 PM
I'm going to a friend's cotillion on Saturday and I just bought my dress today.  It's this one:

Now, for those of you who don't know about cotillions, it's sort of the biggest event (excepting marriage) in a Filipino girl's life... a debut sort of thing, with a court, and it's really formal and such.  The debutante wears a white dress.  So, isn't it like an unwritten rule at weddings that you don't wear white, so as not to "compete" with the bride's dress or something?  Actually, my dress is off-white, but it's close enough so that I wanted to check if there's some etiquette I'm missing.

I was thinking I could try dying the dress, since this wasn't a color I was looking for anyway, though I love the fit and the style.  It's 100% nylon... will this material dye well?  I was thinking either a dusty pink, yellow, or a pale blue.

So basically, 2 questions: do you think a cotillion is on the same kind of level as a wedding, and am I right in thinking it's inappropriate to wear white at such an event?  Also, will this dress dye?

Thank you!
3  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Poor Mojo's Squid on: March 05, 2006 06:39:06 PM

I'm really confused with this pattern.  No needle size?  No yarn weight?... only gauge?  I'm using size 8's with worsted weight.

Firstly, can this entire project be done on straight needles, even though it recommends sliding the stitches onto a circular?

I'll probably have more questions as I get farther, but thanks to whoever can help!
4  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Mother's Day - no, it's not EXACTLY belated... on: May 09, 2005 08:14:44 PM
Okay, so we had our little dinner and such with my mom on Sunday, but that was just with the family I live with.  Everyone's getting together this FRIDAY, and we're going to take her out somewhere for dinner again and that's when we'll all give gifts, cards, etc.  The thing is, my mom is SO difficult to shop for.  She doesn't wear jewelry often (other than occassional earrings or necklaces when she dresses up).  She hates scented lotions.. well, most scented everything, since she has a really sensitive sense of smell, so perfume and such is out of the question.  She's an extremely busy businesswoman, so she's not home all the time to cook or garden or other things she'd like to do, etc. (read: not very many hobbies), she's a technophobe, and is really picky about just about everything else.  What's a daughter to do?  I was thinking maybe getting some good books for her to read, since she's a salesperson and when it gets slow she reads magazines, and my sister is making a photo montage thing for her, as well as homemade soaps.  Just what else is there?  The last thing we got her along the lines of a relaxing, beauty treatment type thing were these really nice gel-lined gloves with essential oils and vitamins that you wear to sleep, and she hasn't used them yet since she always forgets (she got them for CHRISTMAS)!  Anyways, I'm overly digressing.  Any ideas?
