21  Halloween / Halloween Decor and Parties / Clarence's Awkward Halloween (with process pics) on: October 18, 2014 10:54:32 AM
Clarence is having an awkward time being dressed up as a Vampire this halloween. Are toads even supposed to dress up? Is he even a toad? Maybe he's a frog. He's not really sure. The skull he's sitting on is kind of creeping him out.

I made this sculpture for lachapa in the Vintage Halloween Swap. It's made of Papier Mache and painted in acrylics. The bat wings are felt. I saw that lachapa had a toad. I dunno how toad-y my toad is. lmao. I worked really hard on it and I think it turned out pretty good. Smiley

aaand here's some progress shots:

drawing first

Then inner structure

I uh... ended up making the toad too big. New toad!

And eventually I realized the pedestal was too big so I made that smaller too. lol.

22  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Quilted Sea Turtle Number 2 on: October 12, 2014 10:32:35 AM
I made a quilted sea turtle for gotgrey in the under the sea swap and LadybugsAndBumblebees liked it so much she requested a personal swap. I agreed since the pattern was already made. Only problem was this one I tried to improve and by doing that I made it more complicated even though all I really did was make it bigger... how do I mess up my own pattern?! I really have no idea. She made me this gorgeous crocheted blanket in return which I am just overwhelmed with. Oh my goodness it is great. It's flipping cold in Minnesota. We need warm blankets! But anyways lol here it is:

Hand-stitched semi-applique'd eye. Crazy-quilted shell. Machine free-embroidery pattern on all flippers/feet and the underside.

LadybugsAndBumblebees requested not to do the beading it had on the other turtle since it was going to be hugged a lot. I agreed and I think I like the colors better on this one.

23  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / Carnivorous Plant Fabric Wall Sculpture on: September 06, 2014 07:02:38 PM
I made this wall sculpture for artsycandice in the carnivorous plant swap. I think it turned out pretty well. It's all machine-sewn and hand-sewn. The structure is made of pipe cleaners and the backboard is wood with fabric stretched over it.

The top green plants are venus fly traps and the bottom purple plants are Pitcher plants. I had the idea to make them crazy-quilt style because Artsycandice and I had a discussion about loving the illustrator Mary Engelbreit. I love Mary Engelbreit for the different textures in her work so I tried to use lots of different prints in the fabrics.

The pitcher plants are hollow all the way through and everything on the sculpture is able to bend and pose so you can open the fly trap mouths or close them.

The flies are made of pipe cleaners and a sort of sheer material. I made the teeth of the venus fly traps more teeth-like on purpose and took artistic liberties on colors on the pitcher plants although there is a purple one that exists.

24  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Stuffed Sea Turtle Art Doll on: August 10, 2014 06:44:35 PM
I made a Sea Turtle for the Under The Sea Swap for gotgrey. I tried to put most of the most prominent details on the turtle with lots of whimsical qualities.

Most of the embroidery is machine stitched however I did the beading by hand.

Here's the underside:

25  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / The Griffin's Library on: June 25, 2014 10:49:46 AM
I made this for my friend Kenny since he is just one of the best people I know. He's super cute and he writes and reads a lot so I made him an altered Altoids tin library inhabited by a griffin in an old vine-covered brick Victorian house.

This is the tin closed. It's textured. You can feel the vines since the vines are made from embroidery thread. I made the house with clay and painted it then covered it in liguid clay.

Here it is opened.

And inside! The right side is 3D and the left side is paper lol.

The falcon griffin is made from polyclay and painted then covered in liguid sculpy. The book shelf was also polyclay and painted. All the books are made by hand out of jackets from his favorite books that were shrunk down then printed out. They actually all have individual pages since I feel like the details matter a lot. If you forgot how big a altoid tin was (which happened a lot to me when I was making it...) here's some comparison to my hand:

26  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Cupcakes and Kimono Girls Fanny Pack (picture heavy) on: June 22, 2014 08:17:09 PM
I made a fanny pack for my spunky friend Brii! I felt she needed a fanny pack with more personality so I made one for her for her birthday! I have never made a purse before let alone a fanny pack and I think it turned out pretty well even though I was too cheap to actually BUY a pattern of some sort. XD oh well. Picture heavy! Beware! I think my friend is so cute and she totally wanted to model it for me for Craftster so here we go!~

Closed. It closes with a zipper and with some Velcro in case someone tries to pickpocket her then she will hear it because velcrow is noisy!

I put two little pockets in there and one big pocket so four spaces in all to fill!

aaaand Here's Brii!

It has adjustable straps so it can fit well.

Super cute with her fun top!

Brii sees it also makes for a great purse in case she doesn't want to keep it around her waist. She said she is in love with it and she immediately put all her stuff in it. I was SUPER pleased. I am not the best sewer and tend to get impatient so things aren't always even but this turned out much better than expected! Bonus pic; here is the card I made while at work drawn in pen and four colors of highlighters. XD

Thanks so much for looking!
27  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Tropical Birdy Burlesque on: April 28, 2014 08:38:59 PM
I made this Art Doll for artsycandice in the Art Doll Swap recently. I am so happy she liked it!

She is a Red Knobbed Horn Bill human hybrid and a burlesque dancer!

Her body and clothes are fabric and hand-sewn. I painted the black on her. She is jointed at her shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees. She is wearing a corset, some bloomers(?), and a bustle. My momma helped sew the shorts/bloomers when I was running out of time. Thanks Momma!  Cheesy

Her face and feet are polymer clay, painted, then covered in liquid polymer clay to keep them from flaking.

The heart on her chest is a polymer clay door into her heart with a small polymer clay cavity inside holding her (felt) heart and a (shrinkydink) feather connected to a chain. Just a weird abstract concept I had.... I mostly just wanted a door somewhere...?

A lot of work went into the feet for no real particular reason except that I get kind of crazy sometimes and things need to be "realistic" to me so all the cracks you see are literally sculpted in there...

I used a lot of new techniques and I think she turned out quite well. Cheesy I am just glad my fabulous swap partner liked her. Thank you for looking!
28  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Mix-media Skeleton Super Mutant on: March 01, 2014 08:20:03 AM
I made this for the "Loyal Mutant Swap" for Ludi

The head and eyes in the wings are made of polymer clay. The structure is wire and clay "bones" with some stuffing. The mutant is suppoed to be cats and dinosaurs and animal skulls/skeletons  (the skull is a sabertooth so qualifies for all three... sort of) mushrooms (there are tiny mushrooms growing out of cracks in the skull) insects (the eyes are insect-inspired) Birds and frogs (the body is half swan half frog) and she likes old school horror movies and H.P. Lovecraft. I tried interpretting old-school horror by puting the human eyes in the wings as well as integrating some of her personal taste by making the wings pieces of fabric that seem sort of period style and her favorite colors. the entire structure is supposed to be semi-lovecraft-inspired.

29  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / Faux Trophy Head Necklace Hanger on: December 27, 2013 09:00:49 PM
I made a necklace hanger for my friend who likes taxidermy out of cheap toys and some wood.

It took a lot more work than I expected; First, the dollar store toys I bought started melting... so those were a no-go... then I wasn't finding enough variety of hollow toys... I ended up with still needing one more and ended up just drilling right through a swordfish... lol. The rest of the toys are held on by first covering the screws in polymer clay and baking it, then puting them in the cavities of the painted-white toy heads and filling it up with hot glue... then pre-drilling the holes before twisting the animals heads on. The screws also happened to go too far out the back of the board and I had to file them down. It was all pretty insane but it ended up looking really nice and polished looking so I'm pretty proud of it.

My friend that I gifted this to sent me this picture of it in action lol so hear you go:

30  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Dolly and Bear on: December 27, 2013 08:50:49 PM
I made these quick as presents off of a few things I've seen on the internet.
Here http://lollidolls.wordpress.com/ and here http://www.flickr.com/photos/jmaranez/2304574664/in/faves-vaide/ although those were just inspirations, however I take no credit for the initial designs. If someone has a problem with it I'll take them off. I made up the patterns from what I saw and made up the face for the doll.
