I have been having the same problem with knitpro. It makes grey areas where there aren't any. I can't wait to try photoshop. I have been wanting to use this image for something.

I use CP bamboo dpns to make socks all the time. I like a really dense fabric, so the stitches are pretty tight on the needles and I've never had a splintering problem before. At the risk of repeating myself ad nausea, I'd check with the company before blaming yourself!
