I've made a bajillion (yes, that's a real number, at least for sewing purposes) bags of varying types, and I'd suggest using the cotton print you love on the outside, and making a simple lining of a lightweight nylon. That way the bag stays light and flexible, but the nylon offers some protection from the elements.

Y'know, that looks like <i>fiberglass</i>--we had fiberglass curtains when I was a kid about a jillion years ago and the back looked like that.

Hey, guess what, I've actually done this! It works very welll, just be careful--you could easily burn a hole through the leather. It leaves lovely dark embossing that looks rather like branding.
