4  Stitch Diva's curlicue scarf in Knitting: Completed Projects by nabbymac on: December 16, 2005 10:09:47 PM
I took a class with the creator of Stitch Diva a couple of months ago to learn how to make this scarf and finally found the time to finish it.  http://www.stitchdiva.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=SDS-016

The scarf (not as dark in real life  as it looks in this pic)

A close up.

I used GGH's soft kid (color #13 I think.) for the main body of the scarf. The outside yarns are Crystal Palace Musique (Berry Parfait) and the silver sparkly yarn is Rowan Lurex Shimmer (#333 Pewter).

I've gotten a lot of compliments on the scarf so I'm making one for my mom for Christmas in burgundy.  I'll try to post a pic of it  if there's time before Christmas.

Thanks for looking!

Thanks again cejaypi! Also thanks to Pink_Dinosaur for organizing this swap.  I had a great time making everything!

7  Re: Making Hats in Discussion and Questions by nabbymac on: October 31, 2005 09:11:06 PM
I took 2 millinery classes and have made several fedoras so I think I can answer your question.  Hmmm where do I begin. . . (warning this post is going to be long)

In order to make a hat you have to go through a process called blocking.  Essentially what  that means is that there are wooden forms called blocks that are the shape of the hat you want to make. Blocks can come in 3 different styles:

1. Crown blocks

2. Brim blocks

You can block crown and brims together or you can block them separately and then sew them together afterwards.

Puzzle blocks -- crown and brim together

The process of blocking basically involves use a felt or straw body (which are unshaped hat bodies -- think bell shaped) and apply some water and heat to it via a "hot block" (it looks kind of bell shaped. you put the body on top of it to heat  the inside of the body).

Once you do this you put the body on the block and mold the body to the block shape and then let it dry for several hours. Once it's dry, you take the body off of the block and voila you have a hat.

Once the blocking is down you will need to finish the brim edge (either by folding in under, binding the edge, etc.) and put in the headsize ribbon (this ensures that the hat size doesn't stretch).  Then you trim the outside of the hat (there are a million ways to do this and to me this is where the fun begins!)

This was just a basic intro to millinery. I left some details out and just  gave you the main concepts. Anyways, what I'm basically trying to stay is it is a bit of involved process to make a hat and I haven't even talked about the expense. Hat blocks are expensive as are hot blocks and steamers. However, if you are interested in learning more here are a few resources for you.

ebay -- great resource for old millinery blocks
www.hatsupply.com -- sells felt and straw bodies, trims, etc.
www.judithm.com -- millinery supplies

The Hat Book

Hats Design and Construction

Lacis -- they have great out-of print instructionbooks

General info:

I hope this helps. Also, I didn't mean to sound discouraging but wanted to let you know about the process.

Feel free to pm me if you have any other questions.
