1  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Can you dye a swimsuit? on: July 26, 2012 12:41:10 PM
I've heard that the nylon/synthetic fabric is hard to dye? I'm not sure what the fabric is, but it's synthetic anyways.
My problem is that a friend of my mom's made me two swimsuits, because it's impossible to find anything my size (30F's do not exist where I live ><).
And... the colors are honestly awful. One of them is a nude/skin color (same color as my skin >< It looks really bad if you look at it from far) with a band of bright orange across the stomach. And the other is the same beige as those orthopedic shoes grandmothers wear.

It's not like I can just buy another, and I really appreciate the work put into them, so is there anything at all I can do?
2  BATH AND BEAUTY / Bath and Beauty: Discussion and Questions / Bath salts or scrub? on: January 25, 2012 10:46:06 AM
I just made some bath salts- then realised I had made it with normal salt, instead of epsom salt. Can it be used as bath salts, or should I just rename it as a scrub? Thanks Smiley
3  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Discussion and Questions / Help with making a pendant? And how to finish wood? on: January 10, 2012 08:59:25 AM
Hi- so I want to make a pendent with this symbol (with or without the circle around it):

And I don't know how. I've done some wire wrapping but I don't think I have the right gauge wire, and besides, I'm worried it will fall apart like it did last time I tried.
I don't mind trying soldering, so long as I only have to use a basic solder iron. I thought about soldering copper wire, but I can't buy any copper solder and don't have metal smithing tools anyways (if any one has any suggestions for how to do this?)
I've made stuff by carving wood, but I think that the branches would be too fragile, besides, the wood I use is from fallen branches)

I don't have many specific tools, and no money to buy much, besides, it's hard to find jewelry making stuff here (and I'm 16 with zero pocket money). I thought about soldering copper wire, but I can't buy any copper solder and don't have metal smithing tools anyways. No resin, no fimo either, and I'm not sur I like the look of beads.

So how can I make something nice on a budget? It's for a present, and I don't have much time-till friday maybe?! Any suggestions would help, please!
4  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Discussion and Questions / Kid's cloths? on: August 28, 2011 10:11:28 PM
Just a question to moms/people who embroider on kid's cloths- does it last long? Because I was thinking of sewing "I am a princess!" on a t-shirt, but I'm worried it would come off? Is it still ok to machine wash?  I've really no idea- I've never sewn anything on clothes before.
If anyone answers, what is stabilizer, and will I need it? Also, would a 4 y old pick at the stiches?
5  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / Hand sewing linen on: August 12, 2011 04:31:35 AM
I'd like to know what stich to use for hand sewing linen (for clothing) hems and seams? And darts? And how to keep the seams from fraying? Thanks for any help.
6  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Help for my first dress? And am I insane too? on: August 11, 2011 11:01:29 PM
Hi, I'm looking for help for my first project (well, second. The first one was a disaster)
I'd like to make a dress like this (sorry for the bad picture, I only have paint)

I'm assuming the pattern would be something like this, (the red=sewing, and the green=button/knots)
I really need help with this, how should I shape the top?
Um, I have a big chest and tiny waist, and anything loose makes me look pregnant. How should I cut the top to accomadate for this? And how and where should I sew the darts?

Oh, and I bought the fabric already, linen (the shop keeper recommended it) but it's not strechy :/

I almost forgot- am I insane if I plan to make this without a sewing machine? I don't have one, but I really want this dress. I might get one, but only next year or so. What stiches would you use for linen seams and hems? And to keeps the seams from fraying?

Any help would be appreciated, please?
