182  The easiest way for me to do Pinwheels *images Heavy* in Quilting: Discussion and Questions by carolmb on: October 27, 2012 11:31:18 AM
Greetings Everyone,

Am a pretty new quilter, and find I have lots of problems with angles and using template.

With that said. I will go on to why I am writting this.  I signed up for a quilt block swap. Wanting to learn more and grow as a quilter.

The first block from my group I picked to work on was the one I knew would give me fits. A pinwheel. I tried a few times working with the template.

I would get frustrated trying to get it the right size and cutting out the triangles even and straight.

So I looked in some of my magazines and found the pinwheel, using a different style of cutting. Using the sizes needed for the requested block. And well to make a very long story short.  It worked.

Thought I would share, *****This will work with pretty much any size, just change the size of the squares as needed to get the size of the triangles you need****

Well and wonderment

Mare's Pinwheel
10.5 inch block

General Items: 1/4inch seam allowance
I pressed to the fabric on top at all times

Step one: You will need to cut the following
2  4 3/8 square color of your choice fabric (for pinwheels)
2  6 1/4 sqare color of your fabric (for pinwheels)
1 6 1/4 square color of your choice fabric (background)
4  2x6 strips of background fabric

Step 2:
I use spray Startch when I am working with angles, just helps me not stretch them when sewing and keeps everything nice and even. Use if you wish or not

Step 3:
Note: you can draw lines and cut on on those or simply line up your ruler and cut the choie is yours, whichever you are more comfortable with.
Cut the larger Square (6 1/4) in to quarter triangles
Cut the smaller Square (4 3/8) into triangles.
Cut the background Square (6 1/4) into triangles.
6 1/4 square cut into quarter triangles, your background fabric will look like this too.

4 3/8 cut into half square triangles.

Step 4:
Lay A strip face up then one of the half square triangle on the top, line up the bottom edge at the right hand side. You will be sewing a long a shortside, make sure the long side of the triangle is facing to the left.
Sew All four of your strips to Alternating colors, you will have two of each triangles left over.
Next line up the ruler a long the joining edge and cut to reform the triangle.

Step 5:
Sew the Quarter square triangles together placing a pinwheel fabric on top of a background fabric. This does two things. First it makes sure the pinwheels turn the correct way and second it has you pressing to the darker color.
You will again be sewing on the right side down a shorter side of the triangle.

Step 6:
I like to lay out my block before I sew from here

Step 7:

Sew with the middle seamed block on top for the sections here, just makes it a little easier to line it up. When I pin this one I start at the center seam lining up it up, just helps me keep it nice and straight.

Step 8:
Now sew the sections together, joining the two top and the two bottom then sew across the center, I like to make sure the center of the block is matching and work out. I have also found making sure I press to the top makes the seams line up better.

Reserved for post of blocks as I get them done. Am so excited!

Okay It was looking far to messy for me, Will fix and add the pics back in some kind of order
Okay Will just add the pics of those that I am sending to the Persons. And then perhaps thumbnails to those that didnt turn out very well, as soon as I figure out the table settings to format them at the bottom or something, was just too mixed up

The two That didn't turn out right, Wrong size, and one was off center to boot.lol

First Pinwheel, I did go ahead and trim the 1/4 that it was over all the way around, if you do not want this one let me know and I will gladly do another to replace it, my husband had suggested I trim it and give you the option of taking it or not.

The Second of the Pinwheels I managed to get to turn out right. The only trimming was a slight squaring up.

Third Pinwheel: again I trimmed slightly to square it up.

By far the easiest of the pinwheels to do, I changed the way I was doing and it was a joy to make!!

The one came out just slightly under size, not sure why, one of two things come to mind. The ruler slide ever so slightly, or I was off just slightly on the seam somewhere

The first of the Logcabin to finish, I do hope it is "boyish"

Second, if you look at the baby image in the center, the child is "signing" I fall in love with this little guy, I wish the shop had, had more of it.

I hope you like it, It was just kinda scrappy using what I had in the bin LOL

First one done!
Please let me know if the colors are okay?
Another first time block for me
I enjoyed doing this block, It came together quickly and playing around with the colors was fun

Block 2

First try at making anything Wonkey LOL:
Am not sure I am getting this Wonky thing, but I am trying. I am also trying to do you accent block, am sure you are going to get tons of houses.

Please do let me know if they are okay

Block 2
Just in case no one but me can tell, its dragons on a swingset LOL

Well I ended up doing a House, I could not for the life of me think of anything else to do.

I have the bag beaded, now will begin working on the trim.

I used Beadtool4 to make the graph and word chart.

Was my first time working from a word chart, it was a little easier then going simply by a graph.

Its about 4 inches long to the tip and 3.5 wide.
I did tubular stitch till I got the part where it starts to decrease. Then had to front and back apart.  Joining with a running stitch after it was complete.
This image from about halfway completed

This one is just 20rows shy of being done

And finally with the actual bag bead and joined t the bottom

If anyone would like the graph let me know and I shall post it.

well and wonderment
