11  My love/hate relationship with Alpaca in Spinning: Discussion and Questions by Rodelphia on: January 20, 2013 10:16:28 AM
Hello all! I've been working on spinning up some of my alpaca roving that I have, but I'm having some problems. My yarn seems like it just wants to fall apart no matter what I do, and I didn't know if maybe some of you have had a similar issue. I love alpaca because its always so soft, but I think that might be part of why it doesn't want to stay together. This is what I have so far, its just a single thats about 12-13 wpi. I've had to tie it in a couple places where my fibers slipped apart even after I set the twist on it. Sad Help?

12  Another PVC wheel in Spinning: Discussion and Questions by Rodelphia on: November 08, 2012 05:29:32 PM
Wanted to show you guys what I've been up to lately! I've been working on updating the PVC spinning wheel I made a while ago, and I finally have success. It took a lot of abusing my Dremel tool and patience to get everything working right, but I'm glad I spent the time on it. I recycled the plastic pulley wheel, the bicycle wheel, and the knitting needle from the last wheel and I destroyed a couple coat hangers for the wire. The bobbins I made will hold quite a bit, right now I have some of the merino I received in the recent Fiber Swap on there.

There you have it! Any questions or comments are welcome, I'm always trying to think of ways to improve it. Cheesy

13  Re: Fibre Swap Fall 2012- Gallery in The Swap Gallery by Rodelphia on: November 03, 2012 07:54:43 AM
I used Wilton's food coloring to dye the alpaca that I sent. Everything has always turned out great with really bright colors. I got the alpaca from a booth at a craft fair this summer from this farm --> http://www.dunrovingfarm.com/. Its just one of the MANY farms we have around here (which is super awesome Cheesy).
Here is everything I received from RhymeswOrange, I love it all! This one is probably one of the prettiest rovings I've ever seen...and its mine! lol.

The other roving is super soft, I'm excited to spin it. I think I'll make something for the baby with it! Smiley

I also got a great bag to carry my projects around in, and its full of pockets to stash stuff in.

Obligatory cat helping picture. Cheesy

Thanks for everything!!

15  Re: Fibre Friday - September 28, 2012 in Spinning: Completed Projects by Rodelphia on: September 29, 2012 11:41:24 AM
I know its Saturday, but this is what I've been up to.
Here we have some wool-that-should-be-renamed, dyed grey and light blue. Its a pretty consistent worsted weight single, unknown yardage. I also made the drop spindle, it was a failed attempt at making it sparkly but it has a really balanced spin and has turned into my favorite. Smiley

Next up is some alpaca that I spun up really fine, andean plied, then dyed crazy bright pink in my crock pot. I used Wiltons food coloring in Rose, and its really bright. Cheesy Theres about 180 yards total, I wound it into a ball and started a triangle granny scarf with it before I remembered to take pictures of it. Oops! lol.

Hope everyone has a fiber-filled weekend!

16  Self Portrait Spin Challenge: Perfect Imperfection in Spinning: Completed Projects by Rodelphia on: September 27, 2012 03:31:59 PM
I called this yarn "Perfect Imperfection" because thats what life feels like to me! I tried something new to me for this challenge, so this yarn is full of flaws but is still pretty in its own way.

This yarn is like a loose timeline to me and the beads represent memorable moments in life (so there are a ton of beads!), with the two stars representing the most important times in my life so far: the day I got married and the day my daughter was born.
The red is for love, there are brown beads for the color of my hair and eyes, and the silver ones make me think of tiny little wedding rings. The color of the yarn ties into that a little too, I dyed it grey/light blue like the sky:D

This yarn looks good on the surface, but its actually a little crazy- like me! There are points where its underspun, overspun, and sometimes its just held together by a thread. Smiley So this was my attempt at me all spun up- hope you enjoy!

17  Re: May I Fiber Friday? in Spinning: Completed Projects by Rodelphia on: June 23, 2012 06:38:16 PM
So, its not Friday anymore, but I thought I would show you the fruits of my fiber labors this week. I dyed up a bunch of roving, and I bought a book called Respect the Spindle by Abby Franquemont. Its all about drop spindles, and its pretty great. Just sayin'. lol.
