Stay safe sweetie! (Also, I'm worried about how you'll craft once the power's down - do you have some paints or something handy??)

What the heck is a Twiddlemuff??
A Twiddlemuff is a double layered knitted (in this case - could be crocheted!) cylinder, covered with lots of textures of knit and twiddley bits such as buttons. They have been shown to help patients with Alzheimer's. During early stages patients often have restless hands and can be quite agitated - twiddlemuffs give their hands something to do, and this can actually be enough of a distraction to help ease up stress and let them think a little more clearly or remember the word they were previously stuck for. During the later stages, patients can't engage with daily tasks that use their dexterity, so having a twiddlemuff gives them something they can engage with to help maintain dexterity, and a source of visual and tactile sensory simulation. NHS trusts here in the UK ask for donations of them so you can send them directly, or the charity Knit for Peace also accepts and distributes them.

I decided to make mine in honour of my Grandma and Nan. They both were knitters, who developed Alzheimer's. I loved them very much and wish they had had something like this to play with, so I hope this goes to someone's Grandma to help them.

I collected loads of my dk weight yarn ends and used Russian joining to turn them into one big ball to knit from. (This project has been something I intended to do for a while, so I did that in August, and started to knit my muff in mid-Sept) Then I just got happy playing with loads of different stitch patterns - loops, smooth linen stitch, moss, ribs, lace holes.... Once I'd  knitted a long tube, I doubled it in on itself, joined, and covered it in buttons from my stash. I tried to find ones with different surface textures and shapes.

This was a really fun and easy project, I'd recommend it to newbie knitters as a good way to learn or practice some basic stitches - and more experienced knitters can use it as a stash buster (especially to use up odd little bits), to try new techniques and let their imagination go wild!
