21  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: Obsession Swap! CLOSED mail by Nov 7! on: November 04, 2005 09:15:28 AM
Morning Star:
that's a wonderful idea.

if Rackuette has sent you a package, then you should send.  But if she has not, then it's really up to you.  If you'd feel more comfortable holding on to your craft until you have heard from her, then that's what you should do.

Rackuette has been a veteran of swaps and she must be really swamped to be incommunicado like this.  Let's all wish her the best.
22  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: Obsession Swap! CLOSED mail by Nov 7! on: November 02, 2005 05:46:31 PM
I think we can manage without Rackuette for a while.  We've all had times when we just become overwhelmed with life, and I'm sure she'll return when she's able.

We all have our partners, we all know their info, so basically we can move on with the swap.  The sticky part is that we all need to be REALLY vigilent about flakers.

EVERYONE: if you do NOT receive a package, a DC number, an excuse for lateness, or any communication in general from your partner by the send date, post that fact here in this thread.  So remember folks, PM your partner that you have sent, on top of PMing Rackuette.

I doubt anyone would flake, we are all decent beings here, but if anyone does, we can take note, keep a record of it here, and after a couple of days after send deadline ask either Rackuette or one of the friendly swap moderators to give us appropriate feedback.

Edit: let's also attempt to keep this thread streamlined from now on, so everyone can easily see what's going on.

My partner was kind to enough to pm me about that and we decided on the envelope.  So go with the latter.   Smiley

I would love to do this swap but i dont know the first thing about bellydancing

That's okay, just think about it this way.  The way you can approach BD can be how you might approach rock and roll.  It's a type of popular music, and you don't have to play the electric guitar to appreciate it, right?  You don't have to be a belly dancer to appreciate the dance.  Do you like Egyptian culture?  Middle Eastern music (Sting did Desert Rose with Cheb Mami that was popular for a while)?  Long flowy circle skirts, gypsies, bindies, sequins, shiny costumes, and celebrating your womanhood?  Then you could probably get really into it.

Basically belly dance began a long time ago in the Middle East and parts of Northern Africa as a fertility dance to aid in child birth, as well as a dance by women FOR women, not for men to ogle at (THAT happened way after, when bely dance reached the west).  Check out the first link in the first post, you can learn more about the history.  There are dance clips too.

Hi all, it's that time we'd been waiting for:  The OFFICIAL BELLY DANCE SWAP

Here is the original idea thread: https://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=49989.0

Swap name: Belly Dance Swap
Craftster member who is organizing this swap: Flareon
Sign-up date range: 11-1-05 through 11-6-05
Date to send item by: 12-5-05

Limited to a certain number of people? (optional): No

Non-U.S. participants allowed? Yes

All ages allowed? Or 18+?  All ages

Organizer is aware of current list of "suspended traders"
list and will not allow those members to participate: YES

Organizer meets the 4 conditions for swapping and will make sure that every participant meets these conditions: YES

Details of swap: Okay folks, let's keep this one simple and fun, shall we?  We each craft for our partners one large item or several smaller items that involve belly dancing.  The philosophy behind this swap is COMMUNICATION.  Talk with your partner to see what kind of things would be appreciated.  If someone who's really into the dance form wants authentic-looking belly dance jewelry that's great, but if someone who's just into the stereotype wants a I Dream of Jeanie theme t-shirt, that's totally cool too.  I will try to match those together who are compatible.  Remember, we can take this as broadly as we like; belly dance is a diverse artform, so feel free to work with your own interpretations.

Here are some links for those who might be interests in educating themselves a bit about the dance:

28  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Re: Belly Dance Swap?!? on: October 25, 2005 04:31:20 AM
Everyone, I have an announcement.

My plans to organize this swap during mid October has fallen behind.  Few of you may know that my husband was home on leave for the last two weeks throwing me off schedule (extra cooking, organizing, visiting inlaws, you get the idea).  I apologise to those who were expecting  the swap to occur as scheduled and I hope it doesn't put a damper on your enthusiasm.  My DH has returned to his station yesterday, so I'm expecting to have more time now.

I will begin sign ups this Friday.  I hope to hear from everyone then.  Thanks for understanding.   Smiley

Thanks for all the compliments. Smiley

Aliciasjoy, tatting is actually more like macrame, because you are basically knotting a piece of thread repeatedly instead of looping it like you do with crochet or knitting.  But tatting is similar to crochet in the way they can look: lacey and delicate.

What a beautiful painting!  And that scarf, I love the zigzag pattern.  Phenomenal job, Tagurity!
