1  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Letter Purse on: September 03, 2006 11:39:44 PM

I made this purse for my friend Lucy...hence the profusion of L's... I was inspired by all the initial bags and wallets I've seen by fancy designers. I cut the letters out of old magazines (which took a very long time), then taped them with packing tape and coated the inside with black duct tape.
2  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General / paper crane mobile on: September 03, 2006 11:27:13 PM

So, I'd already finished my 1000 paper cranes and was waiting for a chance to find a hunking big branch to hang them from, when I realized that I actually had more cranes and a small branch already lying around.  I had already perfected my crane-stringing technique and decided to make a quick mobile for my friend's birthday:

I used plain thread to string the cranes, spacing them with beads, sequins, and the odd button or two. I then broke the branch in half, wrapped copper wire around it, and hung the four strings with copper wire off the crossed branches.

Sorry for the blurry, dim picture, but I gave it to my friend the night I made it.
3  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / my awesome starburst/movie ticket stub/duct tape/random things bag on: February 23, 2006 07:40:25 PM
Okay, I basically laid out all the random stuff I had collected for years, covered it in clear packing tape, taped in a card board insert, and covered it in duct tape.

Other side:

Close-up of pocket:

There are several more pockets down inside, too. I have a chopsticks packet on the strap for my knitting needles too.
4  CLOTHING / Sewing Pattern Reviews / Old Patterns, circa 1950-60's, I think on: March 30, 2005 04:56:20 PM
Recently I purchased some vintage clothing patterns from a closing antique shop (a dollar each ha ha ha!), and I wondered whether any one had any info on this sort of thing. Two are Simplicity patterns, numbers 2382 and 4547, those ones don't have a copyright date or anything. One is actually iron-on transfers, which really rocks! Smiley THere is one McCall's, 7425, with no copyright date either. There is also one from Advance, 7856. I've never heard of Advance, but the patterns show ladies in pill-box hats and gloves, and notes are written in fountain pen, not ball-point. The last one is from a mail-order, and it's called Marian Martin Patterns, number 9146. THe postmark on it is Dec. 8, 1954. Does anyone know anything about these patterns or companies (except McCall's and Simplicity, I know about them already, duh)? I'm going to try the patterns, but I might end up decoupaging them on something. Any other ideas?

Apologies for the long post!
5  REUSING/RECYCLING/RECRAFTING / What the heck can I do with THIS? / Time Magazines on: March 09, 2005 07:20:53 PM
Does anyone know what to do with old Time magazines? I've got a kazillion, seriously, they're all over my bed (including the one I read about this site in, funny how that works). Any ideas?
