1  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Batman Mask/Hat for a 5yo? on: April 11, 2005 07:53:14 AM
My 5yo has a new obsession. Batman. So he wants a mask. Online they are not cheap. So I think I could sew him one - maybe out of black felt? I've done some paper piecing to try to sketch out a pattern, but it's not coming together very easily. Can anyone help?? TIA!
2  KNITTING / Projects from the Stitch 'N B**ch Books by Debbie Stoller / Marsupial Tote Modification - will it work? on: March 18, 2005 09:28:21 AM
My sister loved my tote, but wanted something a bit different and all in black. So this is what I'm thinking:

Making the base 10x60 (instead of 16x44) and then working in the round 10x30 about 10-12 inches high. I would use the right twists to make the shaping work. Binding off one of the 30st panels. Separating the other panels into a 30st by about 6 inch flap, and 2 10st straps worked in garter. I plan on using the ring method shown in candy stripers to secure the strap. I would add the snap and some other silver embellishments to spruce it up a bit. It would be felted of course.

Do these measurements, concepts sound ok? Basically I want a simple messenger bag/purse with a nice long strap so that she can handle it and her two year old without dropping anything/one.
3  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Plus size knit tank top pattern? on: March 15, 2005 02:37:41 PM
I've been searching some and haven't found much I like. I'm in Florida and it's already been in the 80's here, so it's just not practical to knit sweaters for myself. If you know of any plus size patterns for tank tops or ones you might suggest to be modified or what not, it would be greatly appreciated! TIA!
4  KNITTING / Knitting: Completed Projects / My very first baby blanket and hat! on: March 10, 2005 09:04:14 AM

I made the blanket from this pattern from Michael's.

And the hat came from this pattern.

The blanket took forever, but it's very pretty and soft. The hat was quick and easy! Cheesy
5  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Yarn Conundrum. on: March 10, 2005 05:32:19 AM
I'm a newbie knitter and I have a few questions about yarn. Let me start off by saying that I'm a very strict vegetarian (almost vegan) so using animal fibers is not something I'm so sure about. But I certainly can't make everything I knit out of cotton or linen. And then there's acrylic = petroleum = ecological nightmare.... *sigh*

So tell me about yarns.
Are there animal fiber yarns that could be considered "animal-friendly"?
For plant fibers - what brands/types are good, bad, or just plain ugly?

I'm knitting a baby blanket in a very soft acrylic blend right now. It's my first project and I already did a hat in the same yarn. But then everywhere I go I see "acrylic is teh suck!". Who knew knitting would cause such a moral/ethical dilemna for me? Wink
6  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Chain Mail for a child's play clothes? on: March 09, 2005 09:32:06 AM
I'm a newish knitter, but this is a project I have in the back of my mind.

I'd like to make "chain mail" for my 5 yo son who is obsessed with all things to do with knights. I think I could find patterns for hoods and simple vests etc. easily enough, but I'm not sure what type of yarn to use.

I'd like something silvery gray of course, but I'd also like it to be able to stand up to moderate play (i.e. him donning it and running around the house trying to rescue me from the dragon).

Any ideas on what I should be looking for? TIA!
