2  Leafy Hotpad in Quilting: Completed Projects by Crafty Butterfly on: October 07, 2011 04:40:55 PM
A friend wanted me to make something for her sister that was subtly halloweeny/fall and practical/useful. This pair of Quilted leaf hotpads is what I came up with. What she doesn't know is that I also made 3 more: one for her, one for her mom, and one for me. The other three won't be given out until her sister's package is sent so that she doesn't try to put them in there and does keep them for herself.  They are machine pieced and quilted. I used two layers of cotton batting as the insulating layer. The backing fabric was cut big enough to fold over to the front and use as binding. The edges aren't perfect and if you look really closely there are a couple of tucks in the fabric where one bit was slightly bigger than it should have been. To me these just help to make it look hand made instead of mass produced.

Here's the pics

comments and criticisms welcome!

3  Monogrammed lunchmats in Quilting: Completed Projects by Crafty Butterfly on: October 07, 2011 04:27:55 PM
I made these for a friend for her birthday as requested by her mom. They are basically mug rugs and perhaps slightly larger. The intention is that they are the right size to put a drink and a sandwich on. I machine embroidered her first initial on the blue one and hand embroidered the aqua/brown ones. I used the backing fabric as the binding which is one of my favorite finishing techniques since it's so quick and easy. I know that my edges aren't perfectly straight but I think it adds to the handmade charm of them.

without further ado here are the pics

Thanks for looking!   Comments and criticisms welcome!

6  Butterfly wall hanging with patchwork edging in Needlework: Completed Projects by Crafty Butterfly on: September 14, 2011 04:20:16 PM
My Aunt recently moved home and mentioned that her walls were a bit bare. So I decided to embroider her something. Her couch colors are navy and wine.

I wanted it to be fairly quick and fairly big. I printed off an enlarged coloring page and traced it onto the fabric with a water soluble mark b gone pen. After I embroidered over it i basted it and machine quilted around the outline (something i'd never done before). I also put together the strip edging to frame it in and make it look larger. The backing was cut a couple inchies bigger on all sides so that I could fold it over and use it as the edging instead of bias binding.   I hope I've posted this on hte right board because it is part needle work and part quilting so I wasn't quite sure where it belongs.

7  Pincushion and thread catcher bag in Completed Projects by Crafty Butterfly on: September 03, 2011 05:17:13 AM
I was inspired to make a pincushion/thread catcher bag for a personal swap and decided to make myself a prototype first to work out the kinks Smiley Also my vacumn will really appreciate the thread and yarn scraps going in a bag instead of on the floor. I really like purple and butterflies so it doesn't match my couch but it make me happy. Smiley   Here is a link to the tutorial I used for the thread catcher bag.  http://sewmamasew.com/blog2/2009/03/elizabeths-fabric-focus-3/   I liked the idea of a two color pincushion one part for the pins and one part for the needles so you can find your needles more easily. I also wanted somewhere to put my scissors so I added a pocket under the pincushion.

8  Plarn flower necklace in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by Crafty Butterfly on: August 14, 2011 04:39:01 PM
I've been wanting to try out making plarn and making things with plarn for a while and I've finally gotten around to it. This necklace took a blue bag to make the two blue flowers and part of a green bag for the chain. I want to give it to a friend as part of a birthday present but I'm worried that it might not look nice enough. I'd really love to know whether you think it looks cool or trashy.     Also do you prefer it with or without a button/bead in the middle? all but the pearl bead are retro buttons that were from my grandmother in laws stash and probably came off of old shirts so still go with the recycling theme)

no bead/button

with clear faceted button

with mother of pearl button

with faux pearl bead

Comments and criticisms are very welcome and appreciated!
