11  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Weddings and Bridal Showers / Re: frugal 50s wedding wedding dress and budget wedding on: December 13, 2010 06:55:26 PM
I'm glad you all liked it.

Believe me I was freaking out about expenses. Our budget was super tight. We actually had to cater our own wedding. My entire family pitched in cooking the day before the wedding. The day OF the wedding I was running to cvs (or thrifty) to buy makeup because I could not find mine!

It was stressful but I was so glad when it was over. We used disposable plastic plates and cups and fake silverware to make cleanup a breeze.

As for arrangements, to keep costs down use whatever flowers are in season. Sunflowers are my favorite but I would not have used them if they were not in season. I contacted the growers directly rather than get them from flower shops. In the end each arrangement broke down to less than 10 dollars each. I got doilies, picture frames and aquarium stones from the dollar store.

My dress cost about $100 to make. The veil about $8. The bouquet was about $30 but I used the same materials to make all the boutonnieres and a small bouquet of a bridesmaid (my maid of honor was a guy so he didn't need one)

Tissue paper is super inexpensive and I just used fishing line to hang the poofs.

I learned A LOT about planning weddings because I had to do all the planning myself. I'm more than happy to offer any advice to any brides-to-be

ok so I guess I'm a little behind on this but here is my diy, low budget wedding. My then boyfriend and I had been dating for over three years and he decided to pop the question Feb of this year and we got hitched in July of this year. So with little time and money this is what I came up with...

first, my dress

I used a heavily embroidered lace fabric with a ivory satin lining.
Underneath it all about 16 yards of gathered tulle.
I also made my veil and the men's boutonnieres.

the bouquet made of paper flowers (some spray painted gold)

Next, the ceremony
We didn't have a billion dollars to spend on flowers so with the help of friends we made tissue paper poofs and hung them all over our church

Our cake was at minimal cost also since it was made between my mother and I.
The morning of the wedding I was adding the final touches placing the gumpaste flowers I had made...

We couldn't afford a florist so we made our own arrangements

Thanks for looking Wink
