21  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / gypsy suncatcher!!! on: July 03, 2011 10:15:16 PM
my partner in the buttons swap - ms fiddlegirl8 - aside from being a total sweetheart, also has awesome taste! when i stalked her wists, i found this: http://charmednblum.blogspot.com/2009/10/gypsy-wind-chime-3-finished.html
i thought they were gorgeous and instantly knew i wanted to make one! so next time i hit the craft stores i went on the hunt for mixed chains, geegaws, and some jewel-like buttons! here is what i came up with! since it's made from mostly different types of plastic buttons instead of glass beads, i decided it's more of a suncatcher than a chime.... Grin

i didn't happen to have any nice curvy organic looking branches in my collection - but when i got to hunting thru what i did have, i got the idea to use this seashell! a few minutes with a drill, and i had the perfect hanger! originally thought the convex part of the shell would be the front, but then pulled the lil birds-on-a-branch charm from my stash and got the idea to hang it in the concave part - so happy with how that turned out!!

plus a lil button egg for the birdies  Cheesy

hope you like!!!!  Grin

ps just a heads up - all of these buttons came from the quart bags of mixed buttons you can get at hobby loby or michaels - they're generally 4.99 and they're usually at floor level on the bottom of the button displays, and there are always amazing treasures to be had in there!!!

they were a lot of work, but a lot of fun! of course, Vizzini was my favorite, but also the biggest pain in the tookus!

i was inspired by this pic....http://content9.flixster.com/question/37/37/56/3737563_std.jpg

hope you like! Grin
24  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / HELLO! My name is Inigo Montoya! You killed my father! Prepare to DIE!!!! on: May 29, 2011 10:49:04 PM
here's an Inigo Montoya doll i made for the lovely FoxyBlue in the Princess Bride swap! Unbeknownst to me, she collects barbies, so it was a WIN!

I started with a ken doll and went from there.....

it just goes to show.... there's nothing you can't achieve with a lil hot-glue and a good photo-editing program! Grin

he started out as the guy on the right in this pic....
25  MORE ART, LESS CRAFT / More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works / princess bride swap ~ sad buttercup painting on: May 29, 2011 10:33:25 PM
here's a painting i did for my partner ~ the lovely FoxyBlue ~ in the Princess Bride swap. She had admired my paintings and so i wanted to do one for her but wasn't sure what to do - this idea came to me one night right on the edge of sleep and i knew i had to do it....

this is the finished piece; the photo quality isn't great....

hadn't yet been completed here but it's a better photo....

this is the first portrait style painting i've done in a long time and i really enjoyed it and was really pleased with the final product! i'm gonna have to do more...

hope you like!  Grin
26  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / day of the dead ~ upcycled vintage glamour doll! pic heavy.... on: May 29, 2011 10:14:04 PM

here's a lil gal i gussied up for my partner lanikins in the day of the dead swap! she's a master plushie maker so i knew if i was gonna do a doll for her it had to be something special. i went thrifting and was actually eyeballing an old porcelain doll in wedding gear to dress up - had about decided to go back and snag her when i saw this gal on sale for a whopping $5!!!! my grandma had a couple of these gals on her piano when i was a kid...

she was looking kinda rough and a bit dusty and the hat HAD to go but the potential was definitely there!

took her home and stripped her down.....

a little doodling....

base coat...

detail work....

add a lil lace on her bloomers and a fancy garter belt....

toss the slip, strip rotten lace off petticoat and add a new strip around bottom - re-attach petticoat with straight drop in front and remainder bustled up in back....

re-attach skirt, gathered/stitched into a bustle on back...

tack up the front of the skirt 'cause any self-respecting catrina shows a lil leg, add a ribbon in her hair and around her waist to match her garter belt, and embellish with some fancy beads and voila!!!! fancy lil dead gal ready for a new home!  Grin

so there she is! i hope you like her! i've really gotta go on the hunt for more of these lil glamour gals 'cause i've got about a million different ideas i'd like to do with them now and they tend to fall apart as they get older so you don't see them around much..... hope you like her! c&c welcome!
27  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / shrine for lani on: May 29, 2011 09:46:55 PM

so my partner in the dia de los muertos swap mentioned in her questionnaire that she'd like to have a little curio cabinet of some kind - and lucky girl that she is when i went thrifting a few days later i found this:

and it said "i'm a shrine! i'm a really awesome shrine, just waiting to be born!" i learned a long time ago that when inanimate objects speak to me, it's in my best interest to listen. i actually picked it up (for a grand total of $7) thinking i'd make it for myself. but the lil church wouldn't have it.... it DEMANDED that it was meant for lanikins. again : inanimate object speaks ---> erica listens....  Grin

so i smacked a couple fresh bright coats of paint on there (you can't see it very well but inside each niche is one of four different colors - pink, avocado, blue, mustard), measured and cut pretty paper liners for the back of each niche, and did a lil embellishing.

any of you who've checked out some of my other work know it's a testament to my self-restraint that i decorated only a few of the spaces - i thought lani would probably like to fill up the rest of them herself! here are some detail shots:

lil framed frida peek-a-boo

(this section can be opened up and the picture changed, or the mini-frame can come off the hook and be replaced with something completely different)

obligatory virgen de guadalupe

calavera trio

and a few tiny zombies for a gal with zombies on the brain! mmmmmm...... braaaaaaiiiiiiiinnnnnnnsssssssss........

it was a lot of fun doing this cabinet this way and i think there will be many more in the future!  Cheesy

i used this as inspiration....

hope y'all like!  Grin

Dia de los Muertos / Mexican Folk Art Swap GALLERY

Jefe: We will post many beautiful pictures in this gallery, each of them filled with little suprises.
El Guapo: Many pictures?
Jefe: Oh yes, many!
El Guapo: Would you say there will be a plethora of pictures?
Jefe: A what?
El Guapo: A *plethora*.
Jefe: Oh yes, there will be a plethora.
El Guapo: Jefe, what is a plethora?
Jefe: Why, El Guapo?
El Guapo: Well, you told me I will have a plethora. And I just would like to know if you know what a plethora is. I would not like to think that a person would tell someone he has a plethora, and then find out that that person has *no idea* what it means to have a plethora.
Jefe: Forgive me, El Guapo. I know that I, Jefe, do not have your superior intellect and education. But could it be that once again, you are angry at something else, and are looking to take it out on me?

29  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / fantasy house swap! on: May 15, 2011 11:08:27 PM

so who would be interested in a fantasy house swap? i've searched the boards, and i've found several tiny house and tiny fairy house swaps, less than 5x5.... but i'd be interested in doing a house say.... minimum 8x8 maximum 12x12? (i realize the pic i used, this house is WAY too big, but u get the idea...) the reason i say fantasy house instead of fairy house, is.... maybe fairies don't live in your fantasy house? maybe it's a whimsy house, or birds live there, or the weasleys live there (!!!!) or tiny hobgoblins bent on the destruction of earth?!?!?! or pirates, or gnomes, or four wee beatles with a rock'n'roll band... Grin  of course, sweet fairies and pixies and elves who are looking for new real estate are welcome too..... i'm thinking one large item (being the house), a 6ish point swap, no extras. just serious craftsmanship by serious craftsmen wanting to get together and make one AMAZING creation and receive one in return. it could be built from scratch, or start with a kit /prebuilt and work up from there... if i get some interest, i'm thinking start signups in july, not sure how long they'd last, then a long craft time - maybe 4 - 6 weeks? anybody down?

here are some links to some sweet sweet lovely fairy houses i tracked down here on craftster... Wink

30  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / "HAN IN A BOX" mini shrine OTT star wars on: May 10, 2011 07:03:16 AM
hey all! so i participated in the OTT star wars swap, and i made this lil shrine for Ryn. She's posted a few pics over on the gallery, but i had so much fun making it and took so many pics, i thought i'd share some of my own...... Grin

here's the front - i covered it with this awesome scrapbook paper that looked like leather, then pasted a han outline on the front and painted over it with different tones of acrylic paint.

front opening of box - i thought this quote amusingly appropriate!  Wink

inside the box......

the first panel.... i call this "sexy han"!

the second panel - millenium falcon! textured black and silver scrapbook paper, a scrapbook starwars sticker, and some "meteors" kindly donated to me by my pet goldfish! he said he was remodeling his aquarium, and didn't need these particular rocks anymore...  Cheesy

here's panel three, and the most labor-intensive! i carved carbonite-han out of sculpey, then glued him down with hot glue and textured around him with gel medium - painted the whole thing with silver acrylic and added some accents. the shiny button you can't see too well is a sticker of chewie. here's an in-progress shot of han:

here's the 4th panel! i found this lil pic online of a "newspaper clipping" of an ad for 'cloud city ship repair' and it made me giggle - so i printed it on a piece of newsprint paper and tore the edges, then got the idea to put it with "i've got a bad feeling about this" han... again - just seemed appropriate!  Cheesy

the back of the box - image, of course, stolen off the internet and dressed up with a lil painting and one of Ryn's favorite quotes. (i tried to get all of her favorite quotes on here and then added a few of my own or ones that seemed to fit with what was going on in the particular panel

action shot!

and don't forget artoo!!!!
