1  Halloween / Halloween Decor and Parties / US Women's Soccer Team Pumpkins on: November 05, 2011 10:43:03 PM
The absolute hightlight of this year for me, was watching the amazing run our women had at the World Cup. In tribute to them, I carved my three favorite players and a few of their most iconic moments from the tournament.

I'm impressed you carved this with just an X-Acto Knife. I like to think I carve pretty good pumpkins, but I use power tools to do so. Never been good at carving by hand. Nice work!

Thanks for the nice comments! I'm one of those people that always has to be doing something with their hands, even if they're doing something else, so stitching while watching TV worked well for me.

In retrospect I probably should've started with a smaller piece, but I had a lot of fun with this one. If anyone wants to try their hand at Pit, I got the pattern at http://www.spritestitch.com/?p=907

Never one to start small, I decided to take up cross stitching and this is my first attempt.

I wanted to do a video game character because they translate easy to cross stitching and I picked Pit from Super Smash Bros mainly because I just think he looks cool.

The whole thing took me about two months of stitching an average of 1-2 hours a night when I was watching TV. In other words it took me half a season of Alias, 1 season of Battlestar Galactica and Pushing Daisies, 2 seasons of Popular, and way too many Law and Order episodes to count.

My awesome grandmother then framed it for me for my birthday.

5  Halloween / Halloween Decor and Parties / Joss Whedon Pumpkins on: November 06, 2010 05:59:19 PM
Ever since I was a freshman in college, I've loved carving pumpkins.  Over the years I've done Calvin and Hobbes, Steve Irwin, Darth Vader, the Death Star, and Elphaba and Glinda from Wicked. This year however, I decided to do a tribute to Joss Whedon and carve Buffy and Firefly themed pumpkins. I think they turned out pretty well.

The Serenity logo and Angel are probably my favorites. I create all the patterns myself by using Photoshop to manipulate photos, then transfer my patterns to pumpkins via carbon paper. I use just a basic pumpkin kit saw for all the cutting, but use a Dremel to shave away the shaded bits. I know there are other ways to do it that don't involve power tools, but they're not as fun.

And close ups of the individual pumpkins:

Love the Bobomb lamp! I've had an ugly little round lamp sitting on my dresser forever that is now getting turned into a Bobomb. Thanks for the inspiration!
