1  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Is it expensive? on: October 24, 2010 05:08:41 PM
I'm thinking of having a go at knitting as a hobby that hopefully would have practical outcomes - that is, knitted accessories to wear.  Grin  Only thing is, right now money is really tight...  So, I'm wondering about the cost involved.  I'm guessing getting needles won't cost much so the expense comes down to the yarn.  I'd be happy to use synthetics so think that would help keep the cost down.  But, in the end, can it be cost-effective to make your own knits?  (If I'm going to start buying yarn all the time I might need to justify to DH how this works out cheaper than buying mass-produced knitted accessories  Embarrassed )

Thank you!
3  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / Re: Zippers on: September 09, 2010 05:27:37 PM
I've been looking for zippers too.  I really like this Etsy store and plan to buy from it:  www.zipit.etsy.com .  They have lots of colours and they are selling in both small and bulk quantities.  There are other stores on Etsy selling zippers to so might be worth going to Etsy and taking a look around.
4  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / good place to buy sewing threads online? on: September 08, 2010 10:14:49 PM
I did a little bit of sewing as a child and have just now regained my interest in it.  I'd really like to make some hand-sewn felt coin pouches for gifts.

I think I should use standard thread (the type you use in a sewing machine) to sew on the details and want to blanket stitch around the edges with something heavier - I'm thinking embroidery thread.  Does that sound about right?

Anyway, I really want to purchase the threads online as I share a car but barely get to use it and it's hard to get to a store during opening hours.  Looking online I've seen quilting stores that sell fine thread and its expensive but can't find anywhere to buy basic (cheap) threads.  Does anyone know a good online store to buy from?  Or... is this a case of I really need to get to a chain fabric store or supermarket for cheap prices?

I usually wouldn't mind paying more expensive prices but I want to get about 10 colours in both sewing thread and embroidery thread (so I've got a good kit put together) and I can see the cost really adding up - along with wool felt and zippers.
