the twisted stitches add definition between the knits and purls. You can easily do the pomatomus pattern with regular knit stiches, but the ridges won't be as prominent. i find that you get used to doing the twisted stitches after a few rows of ribbing.  it does make a difference in the finished look of the sock.

I just bought some 75% merino, 25% nylon superwash from www.socksthatfit.com

I dyed it with koolaid, and it takes the dye so much better than the knitpicks 100% merino!  I've never worked with acid dyes on my own, but i think it's the same principle as kool aid!

Try it out!!!
