121  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Thanksgiving / REAL Indian Corn on: September 14, 2011 10:20:55 PM

I've created REAL Indian corn. I didn't grow it myself but wrapped each ear in a damp paper towel to moisten the husks. I pulled part of the husks up to for the tops & divided the rest for the braids. The braids are tied off with a strong carpet thread & the headbands are colorful pieces of trim from my scrapbasket. With the large eyes hot glued on & a feather tucked into each headband, the 3 are wired together under the paper bow. It makes a festive Fall door decoration.

Mr Potts is a ceramic owl I created last month in my pottery class.  I've been taking lessons now for nearly 2 years but only once a week during the summer months---wish it were every day.  I love creating with clay & find it the most satisfying medium I've ever worked with.

I began by forming the body around a wad of newspaper using 2 slabs of clay.  When it was leather hard, I carved in the details and added the eyes, beak, wings, feet & tree branch made from separate pieces of clay.  After the first firing, I painted him with various colored glazes.  I refired him, coated him entirely with a bronze glaze & fired him a third time.  I'm very happy with the finished piece which stands about 9" tall.

123  Archive of Past Craftster Challenge Entries / CHALLENGE 65 ENTRIES / Laminated Bookmarks on: August 02, 2011 10:23:05 PM
For a first entry in the Craftster Challenge, I've made made laminated bookmarks of my own design.  I had an enjoyable time searching the internet to find appropriate quotes and coupling them with photos either I or my daughter have taken.  My computer skills aren't the greatest but I was able to combine the quotes & photos on strips of paper. I then fastened two strips back to back with double stick tape before laminating so they'd be two sided.  I simply trimmed some & left them but punched & tied ribbons to others.  Then I thought to add beads with either ribbon or fishing line.

I even used photos of my daughters & grandlings on one to make it more personal.  So far, the ones I've given to family & friends have been well received & I intend to make more using some of the many travel photos I have.
