1  Teacher Quilt Gift with student drawings in Quilting: Completed Projects by starfish1211 on: March 21, 2013 03:37:41 PM
Besides from dabbling or making a mug rug, I have never made a quilt before. With that said, I was sitting around the other day looking for ideas for my daughter and step sons teachers for end of the school year gifts. I don't like doing gift cards because I want them to see that I took the time and effort into their gift, like they do their students (im not against gift cards, I know not all people are crafty nor do all have the time Smiley I came across a similar project (http://www.thatgirlthatquilt.com/2010/05/teacher-quilt.html where they incorporated the kids into helping with a quilt by drawing. At that moment I knew what I was doing for my daughters teacher! I help out in the classroom twice a month and with parties and her teacher is an amazing lady. Very helpful and caring.

I bought the material for a quilt and cut 20 squares. One for each kid in the class. I emailed the teacher and said I would be taking the kids in small groups out of the class for a project and that she couldn't ask questions lol. I had each kid draw on a square with permanent fabric markers and have them sign their names. My daughter was my helper which she loved. Once that was done, I took the squares home to sew them up. Its a simple quilt and ended up being 4 feet by 5 feet. My daughter who is 8 has never used a sewing machine before, and since it was for her teacher i figured now was a great time to teach her. She sewed half of it. So not everything was perfect. She has a lead foot when it came down to it lol.

I didn't take may photos of the process unfortunately, but here are some of them....

My daughters and her BFF's square with the border.

the quilt after I put the backing on

The final after getting the binding on. My daughter loved learning to make her own binding!

and the final pic after it was hung up in the class.

Her teacher loved the gift. She had no idea we were doing this. She said she has never gotten a gift like this. There were some tears of joy shed. The kids in the class loved being able to see the work they did and loved being able to help. I gave them all blow pop suckers for being fantastic and staying quiet about it. She showed it off to everyone that would walk by the room. My daughter said that lot of teachers came in to see it today during school.

5  Mummy, Redfoo and Rogue (in black) Oh My! in Halloween Costumes by starfish1211 on: October 30, 2011 09:49:59 PM
So I was told I needed to do three costumes this month. Well actually was told about the first one in the 2nd week of October.

My favorite was my daughters. She always wants to be a princess or something of the sorts. This time she said she wanted to be a mummy, well mummy princess! I was so excited.!! I bought some fabric and stained all of it with tea. Then ripped it into strips and just randomly sewed them onto a shirt and pants that I bought for cheap (by this point it was my 3 costume and I became lazy lol). So here is hers!! Oh and she wouldn't wear the dang hat right!!

My husband wanted to be Redfoo from LMFAO. I did his in one day. Just painted onto the shirt and then sewed his animal print onto certain parts of his outfit. I wasn't done with the pants, there were still some pieces to go on, but he had to leave to his party :/

My sister in law wanted to be Rogue. Well I could not find the hunter green fabric that was needed. I went to 4 different ones in our area, so yes, I know its not green Smiley. Plus I was working with stretch fabric and I had never used it before. Let me just say it was a pain in the butt!!!

7  Flower fabric skirt edt 8/10 for action shots :) in Clothing for Kids: Completed Projects by starfish1211 on: August 08, 2010 08:40:54 PM
I had been wanting to make a skirt or dress for my daughter (I'd only been making purses/bags) and came across a simplicity pattern that I liked. I let my daughter (5) pick out her own fabric, tulle, ect. I think she did a pretty good job at matching. The project only took a few hours to get done and I can't wait to do more! Anyways its my first wearable project I have done and I am excited Smiley
