13  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / The Death Of Lenore...my first ever shrine! on: November 07, 2010 09:25:20 PM
Today mum was cleaning out one of her cupboards and gave me this box. It's about 11cm wide, 14 high.
I looked at it for ages and then started getting crafty. I call it the Death of Lenore.
First I painted the whole thing black, gathered my stash and printed out a few things from the computer.

This is the front, I downloaded a blank death certificate and tea stained it. I stole all the names from the work of E A Poe.

Inside cover, Lenore! I found this picture online, stamped a skull over her face. Burnt the edges and glued a heart rhinestone on her chest. Sitting on her shoulder is...a real fly! Searched the windowsills of the house trying to find them.

Inside. Got an old bottle from mums collection (with her permission...she is very protective of her 50 odd old bottles!!!) and printed out a poison label. Found two resin frame things my sister made but never used. A frame and the poison bottle got flies as well!
Mum found this old (rat??) skull a while ago and we have been saving it for an art project. I think its so creepy and cool, and helped me decide the theme for this shrine...death by rat poisoning!!

And the back. Printed out part of a verse of 'The Bells' by Poe.

I am pretty proud of it, it's the first thing like this I have ever made. I love the inside.
Would love to hear what you think of it, as well as any suggestions for next time (besides taking better photographs!) or contractive critisism!

14  COOKING / Dessert / lemon tarts and banana bread - recipes on: October 11, 2010 11:59:29 PM
I love baking, I would happily spend all day in the kitchen baking away. Today I made lemon curd tarts (for the second day in a row...they go so fast in my house!) and banana bread. I decided to mix the bread up a bit by adding pineapple and coconut since the other day when I made it I made it plain.
These are both super simple and super delicious recipes, I hope you enjoy!

Lemon Curd Tarts:

3 large eggs
1/3c lemon juice
3/4c castor sugar
56g room temp butter - cut into small cubes
1T lemon zest.

In a stainless steel bowl over simmering water whisk eggs, lemon juice and sugar. Whisk until mixture thickens and becomes pale, it takes about 10 minutes.
Remove from heat and strain to remove lumps. This is important, even if it looks like there are no lumps there will be!
Whisk butter in until it is melted, then zest.
Put into pastry shells, I use frozen sweet pastry, but these would be extra special if you made the pastry dough yourself!

Banana Bread with Pineapple and coconut:

4 ripe bananas - mashed
1/3c plain yogurt
3/4c sugar (I use part raw part brown)
1 egg - beaten
1 - 2t spices of your choice (cinnamon and nutmeg for me)
1t vanilla essence
1t baking soda
Pinch of salt
1 1/4c flour
1/4c coconut
About 1/4c chopped/crushed tinned pineapple

Preheat over to 175 degrees c.
Mix yogurt into mashed banana in a large mixing bowl. Add sugar, egg, vanilla and spices. Sprinkle salt and baking soda over the top and mix in. Sift the flour in, then stir in coconut and pineapple.
Bake for about an hour. About half way through I glazed the bread with pineapple juice, gives it a nice crunchy brown crust.

15  IMAGE REPRODUCTION TECHNIQUES / Other Image Reproduction Techniques: Completed Projects / Rocky Horror shirts for my sister and I. on: October 10, 2010 08:39:49 PM
Ever since we were tiny (like, 4 and 7 years old) RHPS has been my sister and my favourite movie. We are now 20 and 23 and are finally getting the chance to see the live show! It's not until december but already we are sooo excited, so we made these shirts.
We are dressing up for the show of course, me as Columbia and her as Dr Frank.

Anyway, here are the shirts, I am the grey, she is the white. I love these shirts, and since we are the same size we can share!

Excuse the fact that my hair is a mess and I am still in my pyjamas!

Close up.
16  CITY GUIDES FOR CRAFTSTERS / NEW ZEALAND / swapping handmade food on: September 20, 2010 05:50:10 AM
Does anyone know what the rules with swapping handmade food are?
In the swap I am in we have to send one snack and I really want to hand make it. However, I am not sure if it will get confiscated by customs. I am sending to malaysia btw.

If anyone has any experience I would really appreciate it.
17  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Candles! on: September 17, 2010 04:46:41 AM
I wasn't sure where to put this, so I thought misc. was good enough. I made three candles tonight, two in pretty china cups, and ones in a polymer clay thing I made myself.

Already started burning this one! oops, got a wee bit of wax down the side.

Photographed it before the wax had hardened! This ones is for my friend for her birthday...which was a week ago.  Wink
